IT'S COLOMBIA!!!!!!!!
Yes. Crime rates in most parts of Colombia are lower than they are in much of the U.S. However, use the same rules you would in any other big city — don’t wander aimlessly alone at night, don’t flash valuables (specifically phones), watch out for pickpockets — and you’ll be fine. It also helps that you will be traveling with people that speak Spanish and know the area.
Yes...but keep a few things in mind. You can definitely use taxis in Colombia. However, keep in mind that they will likely be a more expensive form of transportation. Your driver might not speak English. And, as a non-local, you might get overcharged—so definitely negotiate the price before getting in the car. Also, make sure that you tell someone the car/license plate number just as you would with an uber.
While the water in major cities is potable, we advise drinking bottled water.
Yes, but it's better to carry cash. In big cities like Medellin, you shouldn't have a problem using your credit card. If you haven't let your bank know that you are traveling, your transactions could be blocked. You’ll need cash if you use taxis, grab a snack, or buy souvenirs. It’s generally best to withdraw cash from ATMs in banks, hotels, or at the airport. We will be heading to a recommended place to exchange money on Friday July 1st.
