We met in 2018 - right when Daniel moved to New York. Homeless and jobless, he of course thought the first thing he needed to do was date around. We matched on a dating app - she had something about tacos on her bio, he said something to the effect of "pfft I'm from California this girl doesn't know nothing about tacos", and for some reason she thought it was charming. Or at least interesting. We agreed to meet at Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg, and while the tacos were forgettable, the conversation was not. There were so many Chappelle Show quotes and mezcal shots exchanged that night. We both walked away knowing that we'd found someone unique, and a connection was born that day. We both found common love in good food, good drink, and most of all, good laughs. Despite SOMEONE not having a job or a home, we became inseparable from that summer on (where thankfully, SOMEONE got their s*** together). Then COVID hit. Even though we were living separately, we didn't hesitate to quarantine together. We (Daniel) learned how to cook, we (Nia) learned how to pick wine, we went to comedy shows when we could. Even as the days turned monotonous and routine, none of it felt stale. We spent every second of every day together, and instead of murdering each other, we fell deeper in love. In August 2022, we took a trip to Europe for a wedding with some friends. When we were in Barcelona, Daniel decided to break off from the rest of the group to visit Montjuic with Nia, where they could see the entire city. In what was the least slick moment ever, Daniel led Nia to a grove where a photographer just happened to be shooting pictures with a DSLR. There, he presented the ring, to which Nia said "I think I'm going to throw up now." Thankfully she didn't, and while Daniel said some unrehearsed word salad (he blacked out) it was good enough for Nia to say yes. A decision like this, like everything we've done so far, came naturally.
