How We Met

From Falcon Heights to Falcon Flames

"The story of Brooke and Cody started in Spring of 2015 . The pair was introduced by Surina, who at the time was the sweetheart of Cody's Fraternity and Brooke's roommate. Cody and Surina had made plans to have a carbs and vent session about life at the Falcon Heights Kitchen. Surina asked if she could bring her roommate, Brooke. This meet-up blossomed an instant friendship between the two. The night would have been perfect except Cody had not bought Parmesan Cheese (Sawdust Cheese). To Brooke this was a cardinal sin. Cody still hasn't heard the end of it. To say that Cody and Brooke were involved in many campus organizations is an understatement: even before the power couple came to be. One day, Brooke was tasked to pick up donations in Toledo for one of her organizations, Dance Marathon. Brooke thought "This is the perfect excuse to spend time with Cody" Cody thought "This is the perfect excuse to go to Olive Garden!" Cody's Grandma, or "Nana" as everyone calls her, had always sent him gift cards to Olive Garden so that he could take a girl on a date. Brooke and Cody joked about this as they stuffed their faces with breadsticks. From here, Cody and Brooke grew their friendship; getting lunch at the Student Union and seeing each other at many different Greek Life and Campus events. Brooke and Cody began spending more and more time with each other and, over time, their friendship grew into something more. In late 2015, after a long period of him chickening out, Cody finally asked Brooke on a date. On December 12th, 2015, they returned to Olive Garden where Cody finally put Nana's gift card to good use. They then went and fell on their butts at a skating rink. Brooke and Cody have been to Olive Garden many times but have not gone skating since."

The Engagement

Nothing went right until it finally did.

One thing that I have always loved about my relationship with Brooke is that at pretty much all stages of our relationship there was always talk that there was more to come. I knew early in our relationship that I wanted to spend my life with Brooke and I think Brooke did too. I purchased Brooke's engagement ring in November of 2018 on a whim. I reached out to her two friends Allison and Abby to help create a plan to surprise Brooke and make an unforgettable engagement. Allison made plans with Brooke for her and her fiancé Kevin to come into town and celebrate the New Year. To Brooke the plan was to go to the Carew Tower observation deck and then dinner and then return to our apartment to watch the ball drop. The real plan was that I would propose on the observation deck and while we were eating dinner afterword Abby would be decorating our apartment for a surprise engagement party with about 20 of our closest friends. Allison and Kevin got into town early on New Years Eve and Brooke and Allison went to get their nails done while Kevin and I waited. It had been raining all day and the observation deck was closed so the alternate plan was to go to the Art Museum. However it was a Monday and Art Museums are closed on Mondays. I remembered that one of the fancier hotels Downtown was also an art gallery and so we made our plans to head there. We walked around the art gallery and as I went to drop to a knee Brooke whispered, "Not here" and walked off. Dumbfounded I followed her and caught her in a different area of the gallery. I was so flustered that I don't remember what I said but I dropped to knee and asked her to marry me. At this point I was nervous that she was going to say no. Apparently Brooke was suspicious and didn't like the lighting of the original spot that I chose. Always one for details the lighting in the second location was much better for the photos that Kevin had sneakily taken. Brooke said yes to my relief and the rest is history.
