It’s difficult to find bad pastries in Portugal, and even harder to come across bad coffee. But Versailles is truly exceptional for both. It’s a quick walk from all hotels in the blocks and we’d recommend it for breakfast al fresco any (or every) morning. The tosta mista (ham and cheese sandwich) is Alexa’s breakfast of choice and not to be missed.
John and Alexa’s favorite spot after a tippy-top dinner for New Year’s Eve 2023. Tapisco provides an elevated taste of Portugal in a causal, cool environment with amazing service and great drinks. Reservations are a must and can be made for only up to 4 guests (last we checked!), but they have a fabulous drink window on the street we also recommend stopping by if you’re in the neighborhood, which is Principe Real.
This is an absolute top pick, as it's a classic Portuguese seafood spot and has some of the best shellfish in the city! However, it is definitely no-frills and does not take reservations. We recommend going for an early lunch, but be prepared to grab a ticket and wait in line for a table. And to eat with your hands!
A very cool, upscale spot for a special lunch or dinner, with Portuguese- and French-inspired cuisine and a modern vibe. Highly recommend the bar downstairs for specialty cocktails and a very crisp gin and tonic (or three!). We don’t say this often, but the bathrooms, alone, are a must see.
A Mouta family favorite! If you’re looking to experience extremely traditional, delicious Portuguese cuisine, this is the place. We’d suggest making a reservation, especially for peak lunch hours during the week.
This quaint little restaurant is right around the corner from the Sheraton hotel and features a curated menu of traditional Portuguese dishes reimagined in a slightly elevated form. It’s casual, cozy, and off the beaten path with super service – and you won’t find many tourists here. The chef also has a sister restaurant, Suzana, that is highly recommended by friends, too!
“Petiscos” are light, salty snacks that you’ll find in most cafes or on the starters menu at many traditional Portuguese restaurants, so this place is great for a tapas-style meal. This is Chelsea’s, Alexa sister and MOH, favorite spot for groups looking for light bites in a casual and fun place!
Casual spot that Alexa’s family has been going to for years with traditional Portuguese food. No frills and very approachable!
This is on all of the lists and, while touristy, definitely worth at least a quick visit to see it and grab a drink or light bites from a variety of restaurant vendors throughout Lisbon. The Market is also a quick walk along the riverfront to / from the Praça do Comércio, which is worth passing through to check out the river views!
