Our love story began like all modern romances…exactly like the plot of the 1998 critically acclaimed film You’ve Got Mail. Except, of course, there was no declaration of war using a reference from The Godfather and Dave Chappelle was decidedly not there. But, another celebrity did have a hand in bringing us together. It was 2022 and we both swiped right on Hinge. Sam said on his profile that Paul Rudd was his favorite celebrity, so Kat challenged him to choose his favorite Paul Rudd movie. Sam couldn’t choose and said it was a three-way tie between I Love You Man, The Fundamentals of Caring, and Our Idiot Brother. Sam asked Kat the same thing – her choices were a little more mainstream with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old-Virgin and Clueless (plus all his appearances on Saturday Night Live). To no one’s surprise, Sam had never seen Clueless, so he said he would watch it, but only if we got together after to discuss it. On the Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend, Kat went on her first-ever online date with Sam at Stoup Brewery in Ballard, arriving early to spill a beer before Sam got there. We talked nonstop for two hours, bonding over being the oldest sibling, our connections to England, and, of course, Winston. We didn’t even get to Clueless until the last 15 minutes. But let’s be honest, that was just a backup. Kat had to leave to go to dinner with friends, so we exchanged phone numbers and parted ways. By the time Kat got to dinner, Sam had already texted to ask if Kat would want to come over after to meet Winston and watch a movie. Kat said maybe. In the end, dinner finished up and Kat said, “OK, let's do it!” and headed back to Ballard. Winston won Kat over immediately and Sam decided we needed to watch the most quintessential first-date movie since Kat had never seen it – Hot Rod, starring and directed by The Lonely Island. Like a gentleman, Sam waited until the last 15 minutes of the movie to ask to put his arm around Kat. By the end of the night, we were both smitten and just like that...the rest is history.
