How We Met

Marching in time

We met by chance when she decided to join the marching band at UND. Hours spent together standing by each other on the field led to endless conversations to pass the time. We progressed from your typical "Where are you from?" and "What's your major?" into cracking jokes and becoming best friends. After a year of the early mornings and late nights, the friendship evolved into something more.

Dating

First comes school, then comes marriage

After dating for 2 years, she had to move to Bloomington for graduate school, leaving him behind in Grand Forks. With having 32 credits and him flying, it felt like we barely had time to talk, let alone see each other. Then we went through the cancer diagnosis. Throughout it all, we always turned to each other for support and love. The pandemic brought one small blessing to us, we both transitioned into online school which allowed us to be together for the rest of his undergrad and for her doctorate. Now we're both together and ready to begin our incredible lives in Bismarck, ND. Her, a doctor at Maximized Chiropractic; and him, a pilot at Bismarck Aero Center.

The Proposal

Golden hour

On May 16th, 2021, we decided to go on a walk with our best friend from undergrad, Matt, at Lake of the Isles. We went to see the sunset and take some pictures as Matt had gotten a camera and wanted to "test out the settings". Michaela being completely oblivious, thought nothing of this. We stood down by the water, posing and watching the sunset. She was looking off when Grant said "I have an idea for a pose!". As she turned around, he got down on one knee; a perfect golden sunset reflecting off a beautiful diamond ring in his hand.
