In July 2021, Mary Grace was climbing in Ten Sleep, WY when she ran into Peter's twin brother Tim, who told her that Peter lived in Midway, UT. She didn't think much of it at the time because Midway is about an hour away from where she lived in Salt Lake City, UT. A few months later in October, Mary Grace saw that Peter had sent her a message on a dating app. They struck up a conversation and then had their first date at a brewery in Salt Lake City. The next day, Peter left for a fire assignment in California. They continued to chat for a week or so until Mary Grace ghosted Peter. A month later, Peter reached out again to ask if she wanted to go ski touring at Alta. She said yes and they really hit it off this time around. Right after this second date, Mary Grace left for six weeks to see family and climb in Mexico. Just ask them how many hours they spent together on FaceTime while Mary Grace was traveling! This all was just the beginning of a fun and meaningful friendship.

Peter wanted to propose to Mary Grace in the mountains so he chose Mt Olympus, which is one of the most prominent peaks in the Salt Lake City area. They ski toured up Mt Olympus Couloir taking them almost to the summit. Then they skied down the other side of the mountain on a line called Tolcat Couloir which overlooks the Salt Lake valley. After skinning uphill back up to the saddle, they sat on Peter's skis to take a break and look out over the city. Peter stood up then kneeled down below where Mary Grace was sitting on his skis and popped the question! It was a super special day in the mountains doing what they love.
