Corktown, Detroit
Situated in the brick-paved streets of Corktown, this restaurant boasts some bold BBQ flavors, with their own line of curated BBQ sauces -- Apple, Sweet, North Carolina, Spicy, & South Carolina Mustard to choose from. The spot has become a Detroit landmark for a reason – It’s savory and messy; comforting and satisfying. Come check it out! And, if you like it so much like we do, stock up your pantry with a jar of their BBQ sauce at local retailers!
Springwells, Detroit
From their authentic flavor combinations to their guacamole made with a mortar and pestle tableside, this Mexican steakhouse is one not to be overlooked. A colorful mural adorns the outer wall, welcoming you to enjoy some of the best food Detroit has to offer. For a delightful dining experience without breaking the bank, look no further! We will end it with this – order the green beans and thank us later!

Come here if you’re looking for something more on the upscale side; Selden Standard is a James Beard nominated establishment with a seasonal, locally sourced menu that shifts frequently. Their cocktails are fantastic, the service is excellent, and it’s an overall celebration-worthy experience (we went here for Meredith’s birthday a few years ago and had a great time).

When we first started dating, Meredith hyped up Buddy’s nonstop, but Rob thought there wasn’t any way that it could live up to the hype. But he was proven wrong! Buddy’s is the original Detroit-style pizza known for its square shape, crispy edges, and fresh toppings. The Margherita is our personal favorite, however the Eastern Market Veggie is great too, and for meat lovers, the Detroiter, is a classic.
North End, Detroit
If you’re looking to celebrate sophisticatedly, Oak & Reel is your place! Oak & Reel takes a contemporary approach to Italian cuisine, elevating it to be anything but traditional. This spot creates an unforgettable dining experience, one Meredith still fondly remembers as the highlight of her 27th birthday. Come hungry and come curious as you test the boundaries of Italian cooking. An added bonus – the restaurant has its own parking lot, so no need to pay for parking!

We thought we would be ruined for American pastry forever by our trip to France last summer, but Cannelle offers that je ne sais quoi we thought we’d never find back home. We first tried Cannelle at the Eastern Market (see Things To Do), and have enjoyed all of our selections to date, ranging from their standard butter and almond croissant to pistachio chocolate croissant and peach kouign amann. Bon appetit!

Meredith’s nickname “Dulce” (given to her by her Dad) meaning “Sweet” in Spanish is magnified by her truly sweet tooth for such treats. La Gloria Bakery has been a longstanding McEachern Family favorite for a reason. From sugar cookies the size of dinner plates to ultra-decadent tres leches cake, this Panadería satisfies even the sweetest of sweet tooth cravings. No need to feel guilty; just remember: wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth!

Babo is an all-day diner situated very close to a lot of the museums in Detroit; we first went here after a morning at the DIA (see Things To Do). Babo mixes standard brunch fare (avocado toast, huevos rancheros) with combinations like a caprese omelet and Korean beef cheesesteak, all packaged in a cute casual sort of setting.
