Driving Directions

From the Bay Area and Monterey County: take Highway CA-1 South. Big Sur is approximately 30 miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The River Inn is 5.5 miles south of Andrew Molera State Park. From Los Angeles and the Central Coast: take Highway CA-1 North. Big Sur is approximately 20 miles (30 - 40 minutes) north of Lucia. The River Inn is 2.5 miles north of Big Sur Station.

Driving Tips

Please note that there is only one route in and out of Big Sur: the Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1). In the summertime, be prepared for heavy traffic due to the destination's popularity. Rock slides and slipouts are not uncommon in the area and may impact your travel routes. We'll do our best to inform you of any necessary detours. The stretch of CA-1 from Cambria to Carmel is winding and the ride can be intense, so be sure to use pull-outs as needed to allow other drivers to pass. While you're at it, stop and take in the breathtaking coastal views.

Welcome Party Event Parking

Public self parking is available next to the restaurant on a first-come, first-serve basis: follow signs for the Big Sur Lodge. If the lot is full, you may also park free of charge across Highway 1 and walk into the park. Paid parking is also available in the state park until sunset (see fee schedule below). Please note that there is no overnight parking permitted. Fee schedule per vehicle: $10 allows access to other California State Parks until closing on the day of purchase. Closing times vary by park unit. Senior Citizen Discount (62 or older): $1 off, except vehicles over 9 passenger capacity Disabled Discount Pass Holders: $5 Distinguished Veterans Pass Holders: FREE Golden Bear Pass Holders: FREE State Parks Pass holders must present pass at kiosk upon entry to park. Most State Park passes can be purchased at the Monterey District office at 2211 Garden Rd., Monterey, CA 93940. Wedding Event Parking

The wedding venue has ample self parking available. While spaces at the restaurant/general store are limited, the River Inn has two overflow lots located just across the road from the restaurant. River Inn suites are located adjacent to the restaurant; standard rooms are directly across the road and adjacent to the overflow lots. Please cross Highway 1 safely!

Monterey Regional Airport - MRY

31 miles north of Big Sur, Monterey Regional Airport is the closest airport to the wedding location. For guests who are limiting their California stay to the Big Sur area, this is the most convenient airport to fly in and out of. Service is limited via SFO, SEA, PHX, DFW, SAN, LAX, and LAS, so plan for a layover if you are not traveling to/from one of these airports. Monterey Regional Airport offers a variety of car rental providers and convenient access to rental car service from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National. All rental care agency counters are located on the first floor of the terminal building, next to baggage claim. Proceed directly to the rental car counters if you have an existing reservation or need to make a reservation. Individual rental car agency hours vary. Contact rental agencies directly to book a rental car or for additional information.

San Jose International Airport - SJC

If you are traveling from outside the US and your stay is limited to the Big Sur area, SJC is the closest international airport to the wedding location (100 miles). SJC also offers nonstop service from most major US airports. SJC offers a variety of car rental providers and convenient access to rental car service from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox Rent-a-Car, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty, and Zipcar. The Rental Car Center is located directly across from Terminal B. Terminal B passengers can walk across Airport Drive at the crosswalks from baggage claim to reach the Rental Car Center. Terminal A passengers may take any Airport blue shuttle bus to or from the Rental Car Center. Individual Rental Car agency hours vary; please check the listed hours for your agency. Additional service is provided after hours for delayed arrivals. Should you arrive after hours and find no service, please call your rental car company.

SFO is the largest nearby airport offering the widest (and typically the cheapest) selection of airlines and flights. Nonstop service to/from most major domestic and international airports. Approximately 135 mi. north of Big Sur. OAK offers service to most major airports in the Western US and limited international service. Approximately 135 mi. north of Big Sur. OAK offers a variety of car rental providers and convenient access to rental car service from Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox Rent-a-Car, Hertz, National, Payless, and Thrifty. Rental Car Shuttle buses operate between the terminals and the Rental Car Center, every 10 minutes or less; however, it operates "on demand" between 1:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.
