For the rehearsal we would love to embrace the castle vibes and have optional medieval period style dress. Think Renaissance Faire (Princes/Princesses, Elves, Faeries, Pirates, Vikings, etc.) Ideas for medieval dress can include : Tops: Look for tunics, peasant blouses, or loose-fitting shirts. For a more structured look, add a vest, bodice, or doublet. Bottoms: Flowing skirts, layered fabrics, or breeches work well. Outerwear: A cape or cloak can add drama and authenticity. Accessories: Belts, leather pouches, hats, and scarves are great for adding details For our wedding day itself, think elegant and festive! You’re welcome to go castle-chic with formalwear, and for a fun twist, medieval-inspired outfits are optional—have fun with it if you'd like! Just be sure to bring layers and comfortable shoes for walking on castle grounds (and potential Irish weather).
Blackwater Castle is located in Castletownroche, County Cork, Ireland. It is about 50 minutes north of Cork City. It’s a beautifully preserved medieval castle surrounded by lush countryside, woodlands, and the River Awbeg.
Most guests will arrive at Cork Airport (ORK). From there, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or use shared transportation options to reach Blackwater Castle.
We recommend companies such as Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and Europcar at Cork Airport. For easy driving around the countryside, compact or mid-size cars like the Volkswagen Golf or Toyota Corolla are great choices.
Public transport is limited in rural areas. We’re exploring shuttle options and will share updates soon. In the meantime, car rentals or taxis are your best bet.
You can take Bus Éireann services to nearby towns like Castletownroche and then use a taxi or arranged transport to the castle.
Drive on the left side of the road. Yield to traffic coming from the right at roundabouts. Speed limits are in km/h. Seat belts are mandatory for all.
A valid U.S. passport is required. No visa needed for stays up to 90 days. Check customs declarations for any duty-free allowances before traveling.
Medieval style clothing for rehearsal dinner (optional) Expect cool, wet weather. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket. Comfortable shoes for exploring the castle grounds. Electrical adapter for Type G plugs (three rectangular pins). Voltage is 230V, so check your device compatibility.
The currency is the Euro (€). ATMs and card payments are widely accepted. It’s handy to have some cash for small purchases.
Blackwater Castle is located in a beautiful rural area, which means cell service can be spotty at times, depending on your provider. Additionally, please note that Wi-Fi is not available inside the castle itself. While this adds to the charm and unplugged feel of the weekend, we recommend planning ahead: Download anything important (maps, messages, travel docs) before arrival. Consider adding an international plan to your current mobile service. Alternatively, purchase a local SIM card or eSIM for better coverage. Certain areas outside the castle (like nearby towns or cafés) may have public Wi-Fi. We encourage everyone to embrace the digital detox and enjoy being fully present in this magical setting!
We highly recommend travel insurance to cover unexpected events. Check your health insurance to ensure it provides coverage abroad or consider travel health insurance.
We recommend guests arrive on Saturday 20th December to settle in, rest from travel, and join us for welcome drinks. The main wedding events conclude on Monday 22nd December, but feel free to extend your stay and explore Ireland! We'll share the full itinerary so you can plan accordingly.
Yes, we have reserved on-site accommodations at the castle for a limited number of guests. Rooms include castle suites and courtyard apartments. Yes! Meals and drinks will be provided during the major weekend events, including the rehearsal dinner, wedding reception, and morning breakfasts for on-site guests. If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know when you RSVP.
Pack light but weather-prepared! The castle is cozy and casual during the day, but formalwear is encouraged for the wedding. A waterproof jacket, layers, comfortable walking shoes, and a travel umbrella are all smart additions. Don’t forget a Type G adapter for charging your devices!
Yes! In addition to the ceremony, we have planned a welcome gathering, a rehearsal dinner, and an optional trip to Cork City’s Christmas Markets. There’s also plenty to explore on the castle grounds—walking trails, riverside views, and quiet spots to unwind.
