Check out the list of short waterfall hikes, trails, and riverside running trails in the area! Drew highly recommends Catamount Mountain in the town of Stark for a quick hike with views, as well as a swimming spot on the Carry Falls Reservoir. (Google Catamount Mountain trail head, Colton, NY on Rt 56 - 35 minutes from Star Lake)
Take a hike, bub! See the beautiful scenery along the Oswegatchie River and Cranberry Lake. We suggest choosing a simple out-and-back hike since many of the loop trails are quite extensive in length. Parking Cathedral Rock Fire-tower - 15-minute drive from Star Lake. 2.1 mile out-and-back trail average hike time 52 minutes.
For a nice easy day trip, Wanakena is home to one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the United States, the Wanakena Footbridge. The footbridge was originally built in 1902 and spans 171 feet across the Oswegatchie River. Before crossing the bridge, please stop at the kiosk, and read about the history and how the community came together to rebuild after an ice jam in 2014.
Locally built and owned by Beths' Uncle Scott Gearsbeck. Adirondack Rustics Store boasts a wide array of local products, apparel, and handmade furniture at reasonable prices. A great place to purchase a gift or keepsake from your Adirondack adventure. Open 10am - 5pm, Moday - Sunday
Otto’s Abode is a store/visitors center/performance + exhibition space. Check out their fully stocked beer cooler, filled with local NY and Vermont brews, or grab a commemorative Wanakena Footbridge T-shirt (I'm confident all residents have owned/worn one).
