Just north of the Inn and offers great sand dunes to climb, large beach, nice hiking in the rare dune and swale habitat for the Great Lakes!
Park is in Gary, IN about a half hour from the venue and is one of the most recently designated national parks, after lots of advocacy by the local community to preserve and protect the rare ecosystem of South Lake Michigan shore, which has otherwise been largely ruined by the surrounding industry. Another place to see great sand dunes, dune and swale habitat, wildflowers, and nice beaches. (Jess is fascinated by the environmental history of this area, so ask her more about why US Steel Plant is in the middle of the park if you care.)
Red Arrow Highway passes through the small towns along south Lake Michigan shoreline, offering lots of cute cafes, antique shops, art galleries, hot dog stands and more.
The next biggest town up the coast St. Joseph is cute to walk around and explore. Usually can watch some kite surfers out on the large city beach, walk out on the long pier to the light house, or find some good grub.
