About the Basilica: The Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli (Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven) is the designated Church of the city council of Rome. The founding church, which has been expanded over the centuries to include additional altars and the main entrance and stairway, was first build in the 8th century over a Roman temple dedicated to the Goddess Juno. The current Basilica aisles are divided by Roman columns taken from various antique monuments, including from the chambers of the Emperor Augustus. Among the many exquisite artworks that adorn the Basilica and its twenty side chapels, is its Cosmati floor, which represents one of the best preserved floors in this intricate style. About the Palazzo: Palazzo Brancaccio was designed and built by the architect Gaetano Koch for Prince Brancaccio and his American bride, Mary Elizabeth Field. To decorate its interior, Mrs. Field hired Francesco Gai, who painted portraits and frescos, realized the sculpted ceilings, and built custom furniture over a 20-year period. The Palazzo Brancaccio is the last Roman Patrician Palace built inside of Rome. A sneak peek of the Palazzo's beautiful rooms can be seen in the movie "Roman Holiday", where it was used as the interior of the embassy of Princess Ann's (Audrey Hepburn) home country.
