Enchanted

Manifestation at its finest

You would think that in the odd afternoon hours during midterms, Mary would have been studying in the library with Amber as she should have been. Well, you'd be wrong. On a random that afternoon, after having decided that she had enough bad dates from dating apps, Mary grabbed her whiteboard marker and cleared a space in her area—she was going to use this as her excuse for a mental break. There was no point of it, really, just something for giggles. Her list of characteristics in a partner: kind, family-oriented, sense of humor, geeky and/or nerdy (yes, there is a distinct difference), pet lover (preferably dogs and cats) and then it started to get oddly specifically: must be tall (1 foot exactly), dark hair (preferably), tan (no whiter than her—obviously), must play an instrument, must speak another language (doesn’t matter which), a deep voice. The more she wrote, the more ridiculous the list grew and looked like. One look at it from Amber, and there was no keeping a straight face. A picture was taken to commemorate the event and look back at it for hell of it all. That was back in early 2015. Fast-forward to the beginning of 2016 when a mutual acquaintance of both Kenny and Mary (and sorority sister) tried to introduce the two one day by planning a bowling date that unfortunately fell through. It was not meant to be. Oddly enough, when she reconnected with this same acquaintance in search of a summer job, Mary accepted the invitation to her birthday party, and that was the first day the two met. May 5th, 2017. Originally, Mary was supposed to go to this party with another coworker, but she ended up being sick, so she ended up going alone. Not really knowing anyone but the host and their family, she didn’t think it was going to be a fun time. Just as she started to feel awkward in the group of strangers that did know each other, in he walked in with the host’s boyfriend. No, it was not love at first sight. Because the first thing Mary saw was a giant “Happy Birthday” balloon with a cat’s face that was almost her size. A brief tap and it started singing—correction, meowing the Happy Birthday song out loud in midst of the party. She wasn’t expecting it, she wasn’t expecting him to be there really, She had completely forgotten about him in all honesty. He had been brought up in conversation between her and their acquaintance, but that was all in passing once in a blue moon. The first thing she noticed was his height, obviously. Tall, much taller than the host’s boyfriend since he was able to bring down the balloon a head below just fine. She wouldn’t have been surprised if he was somehow a foot taller than her. Then it was his eyes, kind, and his smile: warm, as he stretched out his hand to her. He seemed nice, unsurprisingly. “Hi, I’m Kenny,” he said, a sweet deep voice. “Nice to meet you.” There was no stopping the fast beating in her heart, Mary was a goner. “Hi, I’m Mary. Nice to meet you, too.”
