Flight
Boston Logan International Airport is the closest airport to our recommended hotels in Salem, Massachusetts. Logan has many flight options, providing the most flexibility for those traveling from out of state.
Travel Note
Taking an Uber to Salem is approximately a 45 minute drive, and is the fastest and most simple way to get there.
Travel Note
If you are looking to spend some time on the water on your way to Salem, City Experiences runs a ferry service from Boston every 2.5 hours between 9:30 am and 8:30 pm, and offers a full bar during the ride. Tickets are $30 and the boat ride is 50 minutes long. Where is the Ferry? The ferry departs at 1 Long Wharf, which is located right next to the Aquarium in downtown Boston. Where does the ferry take me? The ferry drops you off at the Safe Harbor Hawthorne Cove, which is 0.6 miles from the recommended hotel. A 3-minute Uber ride or roughly 12 minute walk. How do I get to the Ferry? Option 1: Uber Long Wharf is only a 10-minute drive from the airport, however, Uber prices coming out of Logan Airport can vary greatly. Option 2: Silver Line (SL1) then Walk. After the approximate 20 minute drive on the Silver Line, you will be dropped off at South Station, which is around a 10 minute walk to Long Wharf, totaling over just a 30 minute trip. Silver Line (SL1) to Subway In theory, you could stay at South Station and take the subway right to Long Wharf, however, it would be significantly faster and much less confusing to just walk there. Getting to Long Wharf by subway requires you to take the Red Line from South Station to Downtown Crossing, switch to the Orange Line from Downtown Crossing to State Street, then finally switch from the Orange Line to the Blue Line from State State to the Aquarium (Long Wharf). This underground journey could take 15 minutes if everything goes perfectly, but will realistically take 30-45 minutes as you wait for the subway to arrive each time you switch lines.
Train
Taking the train to Salem brings you about half a mile away from the recommended hotel, approximately a 14 minute walk, or 6 minute Uber ride. Departing out of North Station, from downtown Boston, the Newburyport/Roxbury Line runs every 40 minutes, and tickets cost $8. How do I get to North Station? Option #1: Taking an Uber (10 minutes). Option #2: Taking the subway. Note: Option 2 could be overwhelming for anyone not from Boston or New York. If you choose this option, the first step would be to take the Silver Line (SL1) to South Station. From there, you would need to use the subway system, starting with the Red Line at South Station to Downtown Crossing, then switch to the Orange Line from Downtown Crossing to North Station. This whole trip would likely be 45 minutes, and tickets to use the subway system cost $2.40.
Travel Note
What is the Silver Line (SL1)? If you are looking for a free ride to downtown Boston, the Silver Line runs out of Logan Airport, which is a bus service. Every terminal at Logan Airport has a bus stop. The buses run every 14 minutes. The bus is free leaving Logan Airport, but costs $2.40 when you return to the airport. The Silver Line drops you off at South Station in downtown Boston.
