Travel Note
Ocracoke Island is only accessible by ferry, with three route options. Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries require reservations. Hatteras ferry is first-come, first-served and runs more frequently. Ferry routes can be affected by weather, wind, or mechanical issues. To stay updated, sign up for NC DOT ferry text alerts. Real-time updates can help you adjust travel plans if needed.
Travel Note
The Swan Quarter ferry terminal is about 2.5 hours east of Raleigh. From there, it’s a 2 hour and 40 minute ride across the Pamlico Sound directly into Ocracoke Village. If you’re coming from the Raleigh-Durham area, this route is roughly the same total travel time as driving to the Hatteras ferry—just with less driving and a longer ferry ride.
Travel Note
The Cedar Island ferry terminal is about 3 hours and 20 minutes from Raleigh. The ferry ride to Ocracoke takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and drops you off right in Ocracoke Village—just like the Swan Quarter route.
Travel Note
The Hatteras ferry terminal is about 4 hours and 15 minutes from Raleigh. The ferry ride to Ocracoke takes just 1 hour, making it the shortest boat trip of the three options. Unlike the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries, which drop you off in Ocracoke Village, the Hatteras ferry arrives at the north end of the island. From there, it’s a 15-minute drive down Highway 12 to the village. This ferry is a great option if the other routes don’t fit your schedule. It runs from 5 AM to midnight, typically every hour, and during peak times, every 30 minutes.
