The spot where Alex proposed to Sara, Mytoi (pronounced “my toy”) is an intimate Japanese-style garden flourishing with both native flora and exotic plants. This beautiful garden is located on Chappaquiddick on the road out to the Dike Bridge and East Beach and can be easily visited by bike or car. Walking the easy, half-mile Salt Marsh Trail of the garden offers beautiful vistas of the salt marsh and the pond.
This architectural landmark was given as a gift to Edgartown by Andrew Carnegie back in the early 1900s to be used as a public library. Today, renovated and restored, it serves as an island heritage center illustrating the historical development of Martha's Vineyard through various exhibits showcasing, among other aspects, the island's rich whaling, fishing, and agricultural history, as well as it unique, cultural diversity. The Carnegie also offers walking tours exploring the maritime and architectural history of Edgartown through stops along the waterfront and at several of the Vineyard Trust's historic buildings.
Check out the iconic filming location of the shark attack in Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws.” When filming the 1975 film “Jaws,” director Steven Spielberg’s film crew took over Edgartown with a 24-foot-long robot shark and a cast of bite-sized beach goers. Many of the streets, stores, and houses of the downtown area made it into the movie. Called the American Legion Memorial Bridge, as well as “Big Bridge,” by locals, it’s part of Seaview Avenue, which connects Edgartown with the town of Oak Bluffs.
South Beach is a great public beach option in Edgartown. If you want to enjoy a day in the sun with the crowds and play in the surf, then this is the beach for you. Make sure that you bring cups for your beer, along with a garbage bag for recyclables, as drinking is not “officially” permitted. Right fork is the spot for the young at heart. Left or Center is a more quiet option for families.
Menemsha is a small fishing village located in the town of Chilmark. The village’s historic harbor serves as the point of departure for local fishermen, some from multi-generational fishing families such as the Larsens, Pooles and Mayhews, as well as charter boats to the Elizabeth Islands and elsewhere. Besides charter fishing and cruises, people love to take the bicycle ferry across Menemsha Pond to Aquinnah. Menemsha has some of the island’s best places to get freshly cooked seafood. It is also home of one of the most dramatic sunsets in New England.
Owned by our friends Joe and Emily, this island favorite has indoor seating and outdoor patios perfect for enjoying the summer weather while having a wide selection of New England oysters, delicious seafood, and hand-crafted cocktails.
