Question

Are kids welcome?

Answer

While we love your little ones, we have decided to keep our wedding an adult-only celebration. Our castle coordinator has recommended nanny services that guests have been very pleased with in the past. If you are interested in getting a nanny for the night, let us know and we will put you in contact with some options. We appreciate your understanding and can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Question

Is there transportation to and from the hotels to the ceremony?

Answer

Yes, we will be providing transportation to and from the welcome event on Friday and the wedding on Saturday (not brunch Sunday). If you would like to be included in this transportation route, please fill out our transportation form here. We will only provide transportation if you are within a 30-minute drive of the castle. If you would not like to be included in the provided transportation, that is totally fine and we have included other methods of transportation below. ALL TRANSPORTATION FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY JUNE 1ST OR YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE TRANSPORTATION ROUTE. Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

Formal/Black-Tie optional. Suits for men and a floor-length gown, a fancy cocktail dress, or a dressy pantsuit for women. Kilts optional. You do not need to wear certain colors but here is a Pinterest board for dress inspo: https://www.pinterest.com/madeleinesaves/wedding-dresses-for-guests-inspo/

Question

Is there parking for the ceremony or reception?

Answer

Yes, there is plenty of parking on castle grounds. If you plan on enjoying some beverages, we recommend filling out the transportation form and signing up for rides to and from the castle Friday and Saturday as drinking and driving laws are quite strict here.

Question

Will our credit cards work?

Answer

Yes, most credit cards will work just fine, but some places do not accept American Express so it's good to have a backup. You can check individually with your credit card providers to see what their foreign transaction fees are.

Question

What will the weather be like?

Answer

The average high/low in Edinburgh in July is 66°/52° Fahrenheit. When the sun is out, it generally feels warmer than the temperature says, but a light jacket and long pants for evenings in the city are probably a good idea. Scotland is also known for sporadic rain, so light rain gear is recommended.

Question

Do I need a car if I am only staying in Edinburgh before/after the wedding?

Answer

No, we would highly recommend against having a car if you plan to have any additional days in Edinburgh. The city is very bus/walk friendly, and having a car and trying to figure out where to park and/or how to navigate the Low Emissions Zones is more hassle than it’s worth.

Question

How do I pronounce Edinburgh?

Answer

eh-duhn-bruh :)

Question

Will my cell service work?

Answer

Most US cell service providers (Verizon, AT&T) will have some sort of international plan/partners where you will likely receive a text when you land from your provider detailing the costs and permissions your plan offers. We would encourage you to look into your international coverage prior to arriving if you are worried about it. If your current provider doesn’t offer international coverage, there are options for physical SIMs at the airport or local provider locations (O2, EE, Vodafone). If you want an eSIM, Airalo is an app we have found easy to use - simply purchase a selected amount of data and then follow the instructions in the app to switch to the eSIM to access data. It is probably a good idea to download this app in advance (and maybe even purchase the eSIM) prior to arriving to avoid any issues with downloading on the airport WiFi. One tip in case of any trouble getting service: make sure your Data Roaming is toggled to “ON” within your phone settings. For some reason, when you are switching between SIM cards, this is usually where the issues start. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > (Click Phone Number under “SIMs”) > Data Roaming “On”. It may also help to restart your phone.

Question

How does the bus work?

Answer

The bus system in Edinburgh is very easy to navigate. It is also the most efficient way to move around the city if you plan to spend time outside of the wedding exploring Edinburgh. There is a pad just inside the entrance of each bus with a credit card tap / Apple Pay icon. Single rides cost £2.20 or you can purchase a day ticket for £5.50. If you forget to tell the bus driver you want a day ticket, it’s no problem - the bus system is smart enough to track your individual card and will never charge you more than £5.50 no matter how many single rides you take!

Question

Do I need cash?

Answer

There is no need to exchange USD for GBP at the airport. Almost everything here is credit card tap / Apple Pay compatible so there is no need to carry physical cash around unless that is your preference.

Question

Will my electronics work in the UK?

Answer

Most of the electronics (i.e. phone/laptop chargers, shavers) will work in the UK with a converter (just look up US to UK plug adapters on Amazon and you should see plenty of options). However, there are some devices that likely will not work here, even with the converter. The UK uses a mains electricity supply of 230V, so there is a good chance your hair straighteners and hair dryers unfortunately will not work! Make sure to check the voltage range of your devices to confirm whether or not it will work with the converter.

Question

What do I need to know about entering the UK?

Answer

In addition to your passport, the UK introduced a new requirement for non-residents to enter the country this year called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It should be done before you arrive, takes 3 business days to process, and costs £16 to apply. Sorry for the unfortunate timing of this requirement with our wedding! The form can be filled out HERE: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta
