I studied abroad in 2016 at the University of Exeter where Ashley was attending university. We met as members of the Exeter University Rifle Club (which I joined somewhat for laughs at first – what a funny story, going to England to learn how to shoot). We stayed in touch after I left, traveling with friends in Europe in the summers. In 2018, I went to visit Ashley during my Christmas break and we went to Paris where our relationship finally began! Ashley then came to the US for the first time, quickly ticking off New York, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Washington. I travelled back to England (and Europe) on golden weekends in between medical school courses. There were more than a few obstacles along the way, if 5000 miles wasn’t enough – a global pandemic and the bureaucratic tape around getting a K1 visa added a little extra fun. But quarantining with Ashley provided a few unique opportunities to see the British Isles – from Worcestershire to the Cotswolds to The Lakes to the Ring of Kerry in Ireland. If there’s anything we’ve learned how to do since meeting in 2016 – it’s how to make lemons into lemonade.
