Things To Do

We're so excited to share some of our favorite places with you! Many of the further north spots will require a car rental (or expensive Uber or Lyft) to visit, but there are several local highlights we wanted to share as well.

Philz Coffee

101 Forest Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 321-2161

Maddy's favorite homegrown coffee spot - there are numerous locations around the Bay Area.

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar

19359 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Cupertino, CA 95014
, (408) 359-4690

Maddy and Gene got takeout from here every Friday night and would play scrabble at Maddy's apartment during the pandemic with limited date options. Their bison burger is amazing!

Winchester Mystery House

525 South Winchester Boulevard, San Jose, CA 95128
, (408) 247-2000

Maddy refuses to go here because she doesn't want to deal with ghosts, but this is a local "curio" spot with lots of history. Also right across the street from Santana Row (major shopping) and Valley Fair (with the new Eataly!).

Stanford University

450 Serra Mall, Stanford, CA 94305
, (650) 723-2300

Gorgeous grounds to walk or bike, perfect for those in town craving some outdoor time in the California sun. Walkable from downtown Palo Alto.

Coupa Cafe - Ramona

538 Ramona Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 322-6872

Another favorite coffee shop!

Nola

535 Ramona Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 328-2722

New Orleans style food and drinks, fun atmosphere and delicious offerings. Best for smaller groups but worth the wait.

Books Inc.

Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 321-0600

Maddy's favorite local bookstore "chain" with numerous Bay Area locations. This one is located in Town & Country Village, full of delicious restaurants and cute shops.

Il Fornaio Palo Alto

520 Cowper Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 853-3888

A great Italian spot with several locations in the Bay Area, this specific one is located right next door to the event venue. Gene loves the roast chicken entree!

Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo

1451 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 329-2111

If you're traveling with the kiddos and need some daytime entertainment, this museum and zoo is small but mighty!

Pizza My Heart

220 University Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94301
, (650) 327-9400

Maddy's local high school pizza joint, still delicious and going strong. Right at the end of University Ave and walkable from the venue.

Fuki Sushi

4119 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94306
, (650) 494-9383

Delicious, upscale sushi. Possibly walkable from some of the recommended hotels, or a quick ride away from the event venue.

Ferry Building

San Francisco, CA 94105
, (415) 983-8000

Arguably Maddy's favorite place in San Francisco these days, though best to visit if you have a few hours to ensure ample time to park or take public transit, walk around, and take in lunch by the bay. A different feel than Fisherman's Wharf, which is further down the Embarcadero and more kid-oriented.

Ocean Beach

San Francisco, CA

The quintessential Northern California beach - cold, windy, but still beautiful. The views from the now-closed-to-car-traffic Highway 1 are remarkable, great for a long San Francisco walk.

Sam's Chowder House

4210 California 1, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
, (650) 712-0245

Delicious casual sea food by the coast, ideal if you are in town for a few days and have rented a car.
