How We Met

10.06.13

In a very classic high school sweetheart fashion, Ryan and Maddie were set up to be each other's homecoming dates. After exchanging a few nervous (alright, awkward) texts, Ryan worked up the courage to ask Maddie. Despite the rocky start, Ryan was smitten from the moment they found that they shared so many passions: books, Culvers, and dreaming about traveling. Maddie knew Ryan was something special when, after not being able to make a decision of when to show up to the dance, he drove around a roundabout 7 times, until we were laughing so hard we didn’t care if we showed up to the dance too early. Since then, we have dated across states, countries, and even continents. Dating long distance for 4 years is no easy thing, but Ryan brings a combination of joy and steadfastness into everything he does. From planning trips to meet in Paris (!!) and Prague (!!) while we were both living abroad to Ryan sending me surprise cookies after a bad week, we always knew we had each other in our corners, to make us laugh, to be each other's home. Simply put, life together is always the best kind of adventure.

The Proposal

12.19.2020

From early on in our relationship, it was clear that Door County was always going to be meaningful to us. It was our place to spend sweet time camping & hiking with our best friends, our place to reconnect over coffee and marina walks after dating long distance, and to spend time with Ryan's family in a place they love. In late 2020, we decided to come back to Wisconsin for an extended period of time for the holidays and to ensure COVID safety with our family and close friends. We spent a few weeks quarantining and spending time in the Madison area with our immediate families, so when Ryan suggested that we drive up to Door County for a with our two high school best friends, Megan and Ry, I didn’t think anything of it. Looking back on it, I can see how Ryan made sure that the morning we left was my ideal morning. We stopped for coffee at my favorite local coffee shop, enjoyed it with my Mom, and grabbed our friends to begin the drive up. We spent the entire drive up all singing our favorite road trip anthems at the top of our lungs, stopping for cheese curds, and playing silly car games--basically, it was a true Wisconsin road trip experience. The hike Ryan planned took us along the coast of Lake Michigan in Whitefish Dunes state park. The day was bright, but still that early winter moody--with a fixture of glinting icicles, forest greens from the evergreens, and lingering pops of autumn colors creating a beautiful backdrop. I, of course, was still oblivious--just so happy to be out in our favorite place. After a long hike, Ryan stopped us on the point of the cliff and proposed with Megan and Ry hiding in the bushes to take pictures. We popped champagne over the cliff, opened letters from our friends and family, and spent the whole day laughing with our best friends and celebrating. The proposal was a perfect full-circle moment of who we are, how we’ve grown, and the importance of traditions in our relationship.
