All events will be in the North Lake Tahoe area. The Welcome Party will be in King's Beach (North Lake Tahoe). The ceremony and reception will be held at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort. The Farewell Brunch will be in Tahoe City.
The closest public airport to North Lake Tahoe / Truckee area is Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). It is roughly an hour drive. Sacramento and San Francisco airports are about a 2-4 hour drive, respectively. It usually makes the most sense to fly into Reno unless you plan to extend your trip and visit San Francisco or the Napa/Sonoma Valleys.
You will probably prefer to have a car to get to/from the airport and to explore the area. AWD or 4-wheel drive is recommended. We hope we will not get a mid-April blizzard but it is always possible and will make travel a bit more challenging. If you prefer not to rent a car, there are shuttles you can schedule from the airport to Tahoe. Ubers/Lyfts are not very reliable, unfortunately. There is a free shuttle service called the Tart Connect but there are often long wait times and nothing is guaranteed. We are still figuring out what, if any, transportation will be provided for the wedding events. This will depend on where everyone ends up staying.
The weather in April is highly variable. We will update you with more details on this closer to the event date. Tahoe is known for averaging 300 days of sunshine a year; when the sun is out, it feels warm no matter what month! Typically, the days start and end chilly but warm up during midday. Tahoe Cold Plunging: While this can be refreshing and fun, please exercise caution if you choose to partake. Tahoe water almost never exceeds 70* and will be about 50* in mid-April. The lake is very deep and cold water shock is a real danger. It is recommended to walk in slowly rather than jump in all at once, especially if you are not used to cold water immersion. Snow skiing: Palisades Tahoe is known as the Spring Skiing Capital, often staying open until Memorial Day - and, sometimes, July 4th! There are no guarantees on the snowpack but we hope the sierras will receive snow soon and have enough to last through May. It is easy to overdress for spring skiing, so try to follow the motto, "Be Bold, Start Cold." Don't wear too much insulation. Make sure to pack: A warm jacket, layers, sneakers and boots, and don't forget sunscreen! The sun is much more intense at higher elevations.
SKI DAY & APRES: Ski gear for skiing (we can provide more on that when we know the weather); anything goes for apres! Maybe we will think of a fun theme. TBD! WELCOME PARTY: Mountain Chic = dressy casual. THE MAIN EVENT: Mountain Formal Attire is, basically, just formal attire with a mountain twist. For ladies - floor length gowns, cocktail dresses and everything in between. We shouldn't be on grass (or snow!) at any point but still put some extra thought into your footwear choice, especially depending on the weather. For men - a tuxedo or suit of any color works perfectly. Okay, maybe not any color... Accessorize with fur coats, cowboy boots, bolo ties - have fun! AFTER PARTY: There is no need to change for this but you are welcome to, especially if you are staying nearby in the village. BRUNCH: Casual.
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate children on Saturday for the ceremony, reception or after party. We are working out the details for the other events and have some local babysitting contacts. All plus ones will be indicated on the Save the Dates and invitations. Reach out to us with any questions :) Please check out Tahoe Nanny for professional adult sitters or reach out to us for recommended teen sitters. We cannot post their information online but have a list from our wedding planner that we can share. Reach out to us if these options don't work for your family or are booked so that we can try to help. http://tahoenanny.com/
Tahoe is home to a lot of wildlife but you may not see too much in mid-April. It is still very important that you don't leave any food or scented items in your car. This includes wrappers, scented lotions, dog food, etc. Also be sure to always lock your doors. The bears are very smart and can open both car and house doors.
While we don't recommend drinking it straight out of the lake, you actually could... the tap water here is some of the best in the country. Stay hydrated and enjoy!
Speaking of staying hydrated, Lake Tahoe sits at 6,225 feet above sea level and is very dry. Make sure to drink lots of water throughout the weekend. If you drink alcohol, be aware that you may feel more impaired due to the lower oxygen levels. Additionally, the air is very dry and the sun is much stronger year round. Bring your heavier face lotions and protect yourself with sunscreen and sunglasses (or goggles, if skiing). The sun reflects off the snow and can be quite brutal. You may feel a little more winded if you exercise but, hopefully, that will be it. The elevation is considered moderate and usually doesn't cause much trouble.
