The year was 2020. The world was grappling with a crippling pandemic ravaging the globe. Some thought it was the end of days. Whole counties burned, cities plunged into riots, murder hornets invaded the skies, science was cast aside and chaos reigned. Lyle was adjusting to life in Worcester after moving from DC just 2 weeks before "The Shut Down". Emily was recovering from a massive stroke that nearly killed her as well as finding out she had a hole in her heart which would need further intervention. Both were scared in their own way, and both felt so very alone in the world. However, both were ready to risk rejection and heartache to find that missing piece. It was Facebook Dating that brought these two star-crossed lovers together, and after weeks of conversation online they wished to meet in person. The date was set; a rather hot sunny day in late August, and the designated meeting spot was chosen; the Rietta Ranch Flea Market. Emily donned her favorite sundress (and mask of course) and she eagerly awaited the arrival of her date at the entrance gate. Lyle soon appeared broad-shouldered and handsome, official introductions were made all under the mask mandate. As they perused the knick-knacks and commodities each vendor offered, both thought to themselves about what the other one might look like without the mask (since dating profile pictures are notoriously unreliable). Lyle began to wonder if Emily thought any of his jokes were funny since he couldn't she her smiling and quietly chuckling under her mask. With some nice flea market finds and a growing rumbling in their tummies, Emily brought Lyle to a classic New England restaurant, Friendly's! Once seated they were finally allowed to take the masks off, revealing the rest of their faces. They talked and talked and talked. Despite finishing their meal and ice cream, neither wanted the conversation to end. Taking advantage of the beautiful weather, Emily and Lyle walked a narrow trail along the pond at the Rutland State Park. Leaves rustled in the breeze, the sounds of people playing on the beach echoed across the water, birds happily sang their songs, the occasional passerby hiking past offers a meek smile and head nod in acknowledgement. The summer sun shines strong and bright through the tree branches to the rich earth, causing shimmering shadows to dance across their skin as they walk. The light warms everything it touches and the cool water lapping along the shore beckons you, promising relief from the heat. Emily takes Lyle to a little known spot with easy access to the pond, they dip their feet in the water and discuss everything under the sun, physically and metaphorically. As the sun fell lower into he sky and the evening air began to cool off, they knew it was time for their date to sadly end. A date that turned out to be a wonderful whole day excursion. With a strong connection foraged and a parting kiss both Lyle and Emily returned to their respective homes and hoped that this might have been their last first date ever. And the rest is history...
