Route from Katima to Kabwe Town, Zambia via Botswana

Travel Note

Directions to Kabwe

Destination: Kabwe, Zambia Roads to use: o Taking Rundu, Namibia as the starting point. o Take the EN295 highway towards the eastern direction o Passing through Divundu and the Bwabwata National Park o Beware of animals which roam freely in the park o Continue on the EN295 until you reach the town of Katima Mulilo o Cross the Border into Zambia via Botswana (details below) o Once in Zambia continue on the T1 Great North passing through Choma, Monze, Kafue, Lusaka, until Kabwe Town Time to Drive: o The total driving distance from Rundu to Kabwe is 1200km o The drive can take 15-20 hours depending on road conditions, border crossing and stops along the way Border Crossing There are two border post in Katima Mulilo which can be used to reach Zambia. Route 1: Ngoma Border post via Bostwana (recommended) o Situated between Namibia and Botswana o Opening time: 07:00 to 18:00 o Goes via Kasane in Botswana to Kazungula border post in Zambia. o The drive is through a game park so the speed limit should strictly be adhered to. Kazungula border post o Situated between Botswana and Zambia o Opening times: 06:00 to 20:00 o Entry point into Kazungula town which is 70km from Livingstone Town Route 2: Wenela/Sesheke border post (4x4 only) o Situated between Namibia and Zambia o Open 24hrs o Goes via Sesheke to Livingstone 100km of gravel road, only advisable to use if using a good 4x4 vehicle

Border Requirements

Payments 1. Ngoma border post (Namibia-Botswana) o P280 (Pula)—payable by speed point 2. Kazungula border post (Botswana-Zambia) o Road toll—US$38 (US Dollar) o Bridge toll—ZMW20 o Carbon tax—ZMW341 o Third party insurance—ZMW165 o All payable via speed point, however it is highly recommended to have the amounts at hand in cash due to load shedding and network complications. Additional tips: o Request for a temporary export permit on entry at the Botswana side of the Kazungula border, this will allow you to exit using any border post you wish o There is a total of 4 tollgates between Livingstone and Kabwe. At each tollgate, there is a fee of ZMW20 payable in cash. Be sure to have the cash ready at hand in order to proceed quickly o There are multiple police check points and speed traps along the Great North Road, take caution and be on alert o Have “cooldrink” money at hand in case you are stopped which is likely to happen. The “cooldrink” amount should not go beyond ZMW300. If they ask you for more, just respond “aah bwana, nili che na 100 kwacha”

1. Valid Passport (for the driver) 2. Valid driver's license-original and two certified copies 3. Valid Vehicle registration certificate-original and two certified copies 4. Vehicle police clearance-original and two certified copies 5. If the driver is not the owner of the vehicle, a sworn affidavit is required from the owner authorizing the named driver to drive the car into Zambia 6. Car triangle x 2 7. Mini fire extinguisher 8. Rear reflector sticker - red x 2 9. Front reflector sticker - white x 2 10. "NAM" sticker on the rear of the vehicle

Flights

There is no direct flight between Windhoek and Lusaka. All flights transit through OR Tambo. Kabwe has no international or domestic airport The most commonly used and quickest flight is with Airlink Airways A single return ticket from Windhoek to Lusaka will cost anything between N$10,000 and N$12,000. Rental cars are available from Lusaka to Kabwe
