"Icilanga Mulilo" directly translates to "light the fire". It is a pre-marriage ceremony originating from the Bemba people of Zambia. The feast serves 2 main purposes: 1. Introduction to culinary traditions-it introduces the groom to the bride's family's culinary traditions, giving him a taste of the meals he can expect in their married life. 2. Formal invitation for meals. It acts as a formal welcome for the groom to partake in meals with the bride's family. Traditionally, grooms were not included in family meals during courtship. The Chilanga Mulilo is a joyous occasion filled with singing, dancing and playful banter between the families. It is an important step in the Bemba wedding tradition, symbolizing the welcoming of the groom into the bride's family and their culinary world.
