The Music of the Spheres

“We can set our deeds to the music of a grateful heart, and seek to round our lives into a hymn – the melody of which will be recognized by all who come in contact with us, and the power of which shall not be evanescent, like the voice of the singer, but perennial, like the music of the spheres.” — William Mackergo Taylor "Sure there is music even in the beauty, and the silent note which Cupid strikes, far sweeter than the sound of an instrument. For there is music wherever there is harmony, order and proportion; and thus far we may maintain the music of the spheres; for those well ordered motions, and regular paces, though they give no sound unto the ear, yet to the understanding they strike a note most full of harmony." - Sir Thomas Browne In the beginning, we made music together. From our second date, we looked up lyrics and chords, sang harmonies, played instruments. We joyfully compiled a Spotify playlist of our favorite songs to play together that Jeremy titled "Music of the Spheres". At the time I thought it was just a cool name, but the music of the spheres is a philosophical concept that has been popular since Pythagoras. The idea is that the movements of the celestial bodies follow a universal "music", sharing mathematics and geometry with musical intervals and harmonies; this music is inaudible but can be heard by the soul. Listen to our playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Xw9j0PRe5nj8IG6xESrUa?si=1b4de820d8164ecd Its a beautifully romantic idea (ignoring the fact that its scientifically inaccurate). We fell in love like we had known each other for years, falling into step. They say that when you meet your forever person, you should strive to be the best version of yourself, but together, we are effortlessly ourselves and loved, no 'shoulds'. Love and care spills over onto anything and anyone who comes into our orbit. For our first New Years Eve, we went to the desert. We saw bighorn sheep at dawn, walked miles looking for birds and wildlife, feasted on caviar and champagne and made more music, but mostly we looked at the stars. Our accommodations had a telescope, and we spent hours tracking planets and constellations as they migrated from horizon to horizon, reveling in the crisp clarity of the sky and the dry cold air. Before that trip we were dating; after, we were together. You can describe it with math or science, but you don't have to in order to know when your soul feels at home. We are so excited for you to join us in harmony as we celebrate. “Love cannot express the idea of music, while music may give an idea of love.” — Hector Berlioz
