Lisa and Mark met on a little-known dating app designed for long-lasting, committed relationships, called Tinder. Lisa was drawn to Mark's profile's simple pitch, "Who wants to go to Tahoe?" After a romantic first date at a strip mall in Palo Alto, California, Tahoe was agreed upon. Still, Lisa was nervous that Mark could be a murderer, spy, or other shady character as he was homeless, living in Airbnbs and his BMW, and had multiple passports. She texted a picture of his license plate to her friend Ariel before leaving. The instructions read, "Off to Tahoe with a tall foreigner. If I disappear, follow this lead." The happy couple rode off into the sunset, as they say. Skiing, hot springs, hiking, and many adventures followed. Then, suddenly, Mark was transferred to Amsterdam in March 2018 after 24 years abroad. The distance was only a small hurdle at first. Lisa went after him to Amsterdam in May. They lived together there for a month as she worked on her book and they frolicked in Berlin, Slovenia, and Paris. But despite the magical adventures, Mark was a practical Dutchman and thought the long-distance relationship was impossible. They broke up for a month until he came to his senses with the help of his sister Sonja and his brother-in-law Anton who said, "Stop talking about it! Get on a plane to win her back, already!" And, win her back he did. The rest, as they say, is history. Mark got a promotion, returned to California, and proposed on the shores of Lake Tahoe at sunrise one year after they met. Three days later, they moved into their home in San Francisco. The adventures continued from grizzlies in Alaska to cave homes in Sardinia to meeting each others' family and friends in California, New Jersey, and the Netherlands. On Saturday, June 11, 2022, they will marry under the giant, beautiful leaves of some of the oldest potted plants in the world at De Hortus Botanical Gardens in Amsterdam and live happily ever after.
