Things To Do

The Mauna Kea offers terrific restaurants—including Manta, Copper Bar and Hau Tree—and a wide range of recreation options—including a championship golf course, tennis, pickle ball and beach volleyball courts, water sport rentals, yoga, fitness centers, spa treatments, and Hawaiian cultural experiences—but there are also plenty of other dining options and things to see and do on the island. We've shared some of our recommendations below. You can book directly or through the Mauna Kea concierge. We recommend making restaurant reservations in advance, as most places tend to book up quick.

ATV Tours

ATV Tours

ATV tours are a fun way to explore the beautiful, difficult-to-access places such as the wild forests and cliffs on the Kohala coast. These tours typically take you on a 10+ mile drive through private lands with stops on the way at scenic points, historic sites, and waterfalls.

Boat Tours

Boat Tours

Explore unique wonders of the island—from jetting in and out of striking sea caves on an inflatable raft to swimming with majestic manta rays and marveling at cascading waterfalls. Boat tours on the Big Island will take you on all kinds of amazing adventures, including nighttime scuba diving trips, snorkeling escapades, deep-sea fishing jaunts, and whale-sighting tours.

Deep Sea Fishing

Deep Sea Fishing

Considered the mecca for deep sea fishing in Hawaii, the Kona Coast has a huge ocean drop off that descends thousands of feet not too far from the island’s coast. Charters depart from Honokohau Harbor, which is located between the Kona Airport and town of Kona. These deep waters, nicknamed “Grander Alley,” are known to produce large marlins over 1,000 pounds. There are many varieties of big game fish in the area, including pacific blue marlin, sailfish, black marlin and striped marlin. Ono, mahimahi and tuna are also frequent daily catches.

Helicopter Tours

Helicopter Tours

The Big Island of Hawaii is over 4,000 square miles and is one of the most climatically diverse places on earth, with cascading waterfalls thousands of feet high, lush rainforests, snow-capped peaks, and Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano, which you have to see to believe. This extraordinary island is truly bursting with life and there’s no better way to witness its beauty and majesty than from the sky! Big Island helicopter tours take you on epic sightseeing adventures—from the steep coastal cliffs and ancient settlements of the Waipio Valley to the jaw-dropping lava fields of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding

The paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture is a big part of the lifestyle and history of the island. With a wealth of scenic, open landscapes to explore in Waimea and other spots throughout the island, ranchers are happy to share their paniolo stories and knowledge with you on horseback. The island of Hawaii offers a variety of fun ways to saddle up for an unforgettable paniolo experience. From scenic storytelling tours by horse-drawn wagon to a hands-on chance to take the reins and go on a real cattle drive. Choose from a diverse selection of beautiful environments to ride through including the upcountry pastures of Kahua Ranch, the tropical Waipio Valley stream and waterfalls trails, or the southern reaches of a historic trail to Kealakekua Bay – complete with swimming and snorkeling. As you ride along these scenic vistas you’ll see why horseback riding on the island of Hawaii is truly unique.

Island and Hiking Tours

Island and Hiking Tours

Like all of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. With a plethora of waterfalls, trails, and even the world’s tallest mountain, it’s no wonder that hiking is so popular here. And much like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, the hikes on the Big Island can take you through volcano craters to green sand beaches, or even towards the stars. Highlights include Kilauea’iki Trail through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Pololu Valley hike with views of black sand beaches and dramatic cliffs faces.

Kayak Tours

Kayak Tours

An assortment of different kayak tours are available, on your own or guided. The calm waters of Kona offer ideal kayak conditions. Organized tours provide kayakers access to remote areas, including hidden beaches and scenic sites.

Private Charter Sail

Private Charter Sail

Charter a boat of your own for a fishing, snorkeling, or sightseeing trip with a small group, or hire a private catamaran for a large group luxury sail. Professional crews will take care of your every need and provide you with any gear and assistance you might need. Whether it's a family fishing trip, a group snorkel among vibrant reefs, or just a relaxing sunset cruise with cocktails and appetizers, you'll find a private boat charter perfect for you.

Submarine Tour

Submarine Tour

Dive 100 feet below the surface and experience Kona’s marine mysteries. Allow Atlantis Submarines to show you the other 96% of Kona you can’t see any other way. Treat yourself to Kona’s most beautiful and captivating scenery, habitats, and isolated treasures.

Surfing

Surfing

Surfing was literally the "Sport of Kings" in Hawaii, reserved only for the alii (royalty). Today on the island of Hawaii, you can experience the rush of catching a wave yourself by taking a surfing lesson. Many beaches on the island of Hawaii are suited for more experienced surfers. However, there are a handful of spots that cater to beginners and intermediate-level riders, including Pine Trees Beach north of Kona Airport (intermediate and higher) and Kahaluu Beach in Keauhou for beginners. Experienced instructors will take first-timers to safe breaks and get you on your feet during lessons that last between 1-2 hours. Check with lifeguards before heading out regarding conditions. And as the locals say, always surf with aloha. Experience for yourself why surfing is the “Sport of Kings.”

Zip Lining

Zip Lining

Whether you’re soaring over waterfalls, lush treetops or 200-foot river gorges, ziplines are an exhilarating, eco-friendly way to see the island of Hawaii’s most majestic sights. From Hilo to the Kohala Coast, zipline tours showcase the amazing diversity of the island's landscapes. Most island of Hawaii zipline tours are open to riders of all experience levels, making it a fun, safe way for everyone in the family to experience Hawaii.

Snorkeling & Scuba

Snorkeling & Scuba

The island of Hawaii and its clear blue waters are truly a snorkeling and scuba paradise. The Kona side is famous for its visibility and calm waters, protected from the winds by the massive slopes of Maunaloa. One of the most memorable experiences you can have on the island of Hawaii is a swim with manta rays. Book a sunset dive tour and scuba dive or snorkel with these gentle mantas (mantas don’t have stingers like sting rays or eagle rays). You’ll marvel at how these otherworldly creatures glide within inches of you as they feed on microscopic plankton in the illuminated waters. For serious snorkeling, it’s best to take a boat charter or travel with a local guide, somebody who knows the best spots and who can read changing weather patterns. For scuba divers, you can take an introductory “resort course” for beginners or most dive shops offer certification courses for more advanced dives. Some of Hawaii’s best snorkeling and scuba diving can be found on the island of Hawaii.
