The Downtown Mall is a vibrant pedestrian mall lined with historic buildings, local boutiques, restaurants and shops. Favorite restaurants and bars on or near the Downtown Mall include The Nook (diner), Jack Brown's (Southern/bar), C&O (upscale French), Monsoon Siam (Thai), The Fitzroy (American/bar), Marco & Luca (late night dumplings), Brazos (tacos), Maya (Southern), Miller's (dive bar), Tavern & Grocery (American), Orzo (Mediterranean) and Alley Light (speakeasy).
The University of Virginia is one of the nation's most picturesque college campuses (obnoxiously referred to as the "grounds") and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights include the Rotunda, Lawn and Chapel, which are right across from the Corner.
Located directly across from the University, the Corner is the main dining, drinking and shopping drag for students. Favorite bars and restaurants include Bodo's Bagels (famous bagels), The Virginian (Southern/bar), Mellow Mushroom (pizza), The Graduate (American/rooftop bar) and The Spot (greasy spoon).
There are several great breweries in and around Charlottesville. Options within walking distance or a quick Uber from the Downtown Mall include Three Notch'd, Starr Hill, South Street, Devil's Backbone, Kardinal Hall and Random Row.
A favorite hike for UVA students and local families, the Humpback Rocks trail is a two-mile trail about 30 minutes outside of Charlottesville offering great views of the Shenandoah Valley. The hike takes about two hours to complete and isn't particularly strenuous.
A short drive or Uber from Charlottesville, Carter Mountain is a hilltop orchard, cidery, country store and bakery with stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley. On Thursday evenings they host their famous "sunset series" with live music overlooking the mountains.
