As an FYI, please be cautious and do not drink tap water straight out of the faucets. Most lodging facilities should provide large jugs or bottles of water to use for drinking. Brushing teeth with tap water is more accepted, as you do not ingest much and the small exposure can actually help you acclimate and build some immunity. If you are planning to stay for a longer time it might not hurt to start meeting some of the germs. At restaurants, ensure the water you get is bottled or filtered. Most good restaurants will use filtered water to wash their vegetables and make ice from. Sticking to more tourist-friendly spots, or sticking to non-water or un-iced beverages may be a good idea at the more local spots. We recommend bringing charcoal pills or other supplements to help aid any toxin absorption or indigestion, as it can sometimes be hard to avoid entirely. Some OTC medications such as Pepto Bismol or anti diarrheals might be your friend..
1. Consider exchanging USD for MXN pesos through your bank before you travel. There will also be money exchange places in PDC where exchange rates may vary. Most VISA cards should work. 2. We recommend taking advantage of the Duty Free store upon arrival in the Cancun airport. They have a great selection of small batch tequilas and mezcals. 3. When leaving the airport, you will be asked if you have anything to declare before exiting. Unless you have more than $10,000 USD cash on you, your answer is No.
There are OXXO convenient stores every few blocks. They will have most everything you'd need. There are also other convenient stores and small shops all around Quinta Avenida. Pro tip: The electrolyte drink of choice in Mexico is Electrolit - very tasty and great for getting hydrated after a long night :)
