How we met

Lily's point of view

Our love story began before I knew what it was and how much it would mean to me years later. A shared meeting at work led to the first words I remember Nick saying to me: "I'm sorry what was your name again? I'm Nick—I'm joining TechRadar soon." And so a friendship began inside another shared space: a small, gray cubicle where group lunches led to meals one-on-one, then frequent weekend hangouts. I knew right away it was something special. How could I spend so much time with someone at work, then outside of work and never be sick him? This was something rare and dear to me, so much that I didn't want to lose it. Over the years, after many wine tastings, board games, and late night chats about our fears and dreams, our friendship deepened. As life's unpredictable tapestry continuously pulled apart at the seams, Nick was always there to listen, gently gathering the loose threads, helping me sift through it all. Moving to Alaska meant less hangouts, but we spoke often, and for hours. In time, I left, making my way to Buffalo where I finally allowed myself to wonder about what could be if things were different between us. Until I didn't have to wonder anymore. After seven years of loyal, unwavering friendship, we took the plunge—and kept diving further than we've ever gone before. One year later, I can say I've never been happier and I cannot wait to see where our adventure takes us next.

How we met

Nick's point of view

I’ve always believed in fate. As hokey as it sounds, I’ve always felt like there was a person out there who would be my missing puzzle piece—someone who was perfect for me. Everyone I introduced Lily to would, eventually, tell me that they thought she was that person for me. Admittedly, it was something I always felt was true, too. Eight years later, I know she’s the one. How we got to this point is a series of triumphs and setbacks, heartbreak and healing. We took different paths to get here: hers would bring her as far out as Alaska, and mine a short stint in California’s Central Valley. Despite the distance, we’ve been there for one another first as co-workers, then as friends and, soon, husband and wife. The story of our relationship spans three states and thousands of miles and is only possible because of the courage that it would take, from both of us, to admit that we wanted to be more than friends. Being with Lily helps me be the best version of myself. She brings out the fun-loving, adventurous side of me that I had been missing in my life for close to a decade. She’s always an inspiration, my greatest confidant and my go-to advisor. I could search the world over and never find another person who brings me as much happiness and joy as she does.
