Updated 4/2/21. You will need to get tested 3 days before flying into the United States and show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight, or show documentation of recovery as created by your care provider. Viral testing could be either an antigen test or a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). Examples include RT-PCR, RT-LAMP, TMA, NEAR, and HDA. The test used must be authorized for use by the relevant national authority for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the country where the test is administered. A verifiable test result must be paper or electronic written documentation of a laboratory test result. Testing must be performed using a viral test (NAAT or antigen). The test results must include information that identifies the person, a specimen collection date, and the type of test. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html
Before traveling to Illinois, please check your state's travel guideline. This is relevant when returning to your state after the event. Some states are issuing travel order (strictly enforced guidelines) and others are issuing travel advisory (guidelines are recommended but not enforced). The state of Illinois is under travel ADVISORY. It follows guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPS) and Center for Disease Control (CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19.html). Currently, it is recommended, but not enforced, that one is tested 3 days prior to entering IL and getting tested 3-5 days after the arrival. If you are staying longer than 3 days in IL and would like to be tested, we can help locate a testing site. The City of Chicago is an exception. It is under travel ORDER: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/covid-19/home/emergency-travel-order.html. Thus, one must show negative result obtained 3 days before arrival.
In most states, you are exempt from both the travel order and advisory if you meet either criterion: (1) It has been at least 2 weeks since my second shot of the 2-dose vaccines (e.g. Moderna, Pfizer). (2) It has been at least 2 weeks since my shot of the single-dose vaccine (e.g. J&J). Generally, those who have been vaccinated just need to monitor their symptoms.
