FAQs

Question

Cash?

Answer

Most places accept Mexican Pesos, USD or Credit Card. It is a good idea to have Pesos on you at all times as there are a few places that only accept Pesos and it is the easiest way to pay. It's best to exchange dollars at your departure airport or before you plan to travel. You can also withdraw Pesos at ATM's in the Akumal Town Area.

Question

Where to eat?

Answer

Akumal is a small town with a limited amount of restaurants and bars. The hotel (Las Villas Akumal) has a simplistic restaurant for all your needs with complimentary breakfast. We recommend stopping by a grocery store to get essentials, water and snacks given that all rooms will have a full kitchen and a beautiful view. All guests are invited to our welcome dinner, Saturday BBQ and wedding which will have delicious food and drinks! A few of our favorite bars/restaurants in the area are La Buena Vida, La Lunita, La Taverna and Jungle Fish.

Question

Any important things to pack?

Answer

Akumal is a laid back, private beach town - a place to unplug. Though the wedding events will be elegant and fun, plan to relax and unwind for the rest of the time so pack a bathing suit, flip flops and a good book! Bug spray - Tulum/Akumal is basically a jungle on the beach so there can be a decent amount of mosquitos. And they are out for blood. Make sure to bring strong bug spray (with deet). Sunscreen - the Mayan sun can be very strong. Pack sunscreen! Bring a straw hat and good sunglasses too. Snorkels - there are amazing underwater caves, sea turtles and reefs to explore. You will want goggles at the very least!

Question

How to get around?

Answer

If you want the ease of getting around quickly and cheaply consider renting a car at the airport. This will likely be your cheapest option. The easiest rentals are from Hertz, Avis, Thrifty Dollar, Mex, Fox and Alamo as these are all located in the airport terminal. Cabs are also an option, but it can be hard to flag one down given the secluded location. The hotel reception can always call a cab for you (even if you are staying in a closeby Air Bnb).

Question

Safety?

Answer

While parts of Mexico have experienced drug-related violence, Akumal has remained a safe travel destination. Travelers should exercise common sense: for example, don't walk around alone at night. You should also not drink the tap water in Akumal. To avoid unnecessary illness, always make sure your bottled water is sealed.
