We met through our studies of Arts and Culture at Radboud University in 2018 and became best friends within the first introduction week. Res began by chatting with Lexi while biking through the Dutch streets, and we hit it off immediately. Our similarities of growing up multicultural, a strong affinity to water and other things made our friendship feel inevitable. Within the first week, we biked together to class and talked for hours on end into the late nights. We talked about life, everything and nothing. Res shared her love for music and would sing her favorite songs, and if not before, Lexi fell undeniably in love with Res then. There, we also met some of our closest friends and quickly committed to moving in while we were 'just friends'. After months of long-lasting hugs, secret yearning and multiple occasions of almost kissing goodbye in the elevator, our relationship blossomed into romance on a fateful evening, where Res could no longer stand the tension, and kissed Lexi. From then on, everything, and nothing at all, had changed. After our first year of Uni, we moved from student housing to our house in Symfoniestraat where we built a home, adopted two cats, Sophia and Doxa, with our roommate Kyrke, and eventually, navigated quarantine. Through lockdown, our home soon became our little world, in that time, we wrote our thesis' in a frenzy, daydreamt of van or boat adventures, and went on walks with the cats through the quiet neighborhood. Lexi and I began planning our move out of the Netherlands and settled on a small, slightly banged-up Sprinter van we named Schmandy. We slowly began introducing the van to Doxa, who seemed intrigued and curious. By Spring of 2022, we were graduated, restless and ready to move! Doxa had been leash trained and was familiar with the van, so there was no time like the present to hit the road and explore the great unknown!
Our travels took us first to visit family in Germany, then as the summer heat grew, we migrated into the deep forests of eastern France. Our little family adjusted to a new rhythm, endless nature and the comfort of a small (tiny) home which was a needed change for us and for Doxa after lockdown. Her new territory of the van and its new camp spots was a bit scary, but mostly exciting. She opened up new adventures for her moms as well, like what prickly bush could she crawl under and would her moms follow (Res often did, emerging with sticks and twigs for hair decoration)? Or how fun would it be to bring a mouse on top of the van during her nighttime excursions! Doxa’s life had opened in a new way, and she took it on with strength and grace of a tiger. We slowly traveled through south-central France, stopping along the way to enter Toulouse for a fabulous Pride parade, Res’s first big one! Then, we hit the coast, Doxa could not have been less impressed by the ocean, not a fan. Nevertheless, we followed the coast north. We evaded forest fires, slept among oyster farms and bathed in cold mountain streams. We slowly made our way to Brittany (Bretagne), where we spent some weeks in Erquy, Lexi’s (French) ancestral home. As the months continued, we began thinking of our next destination. We didn’t want to leave our van behind, but thought it may be time for a break from tiny living. Res decided it was also time to join the job market and relieve Lexi of carrying the income from her freelance work. After discussions, we decided that by the new year of 2023, we would move to Athens, there we would try out city living, and be closer to some old friends.
Our move to a (seemingly) random European city left many confused, understandably, why would two people with three nationalities among them, choose to move and live in a fourth country where they neither speak, nor read nor understand the language, let alone visited the city ever before! While we didn't have a logical response, Res had a promising job lined up and Lexi was enjoying her apartment hunting, so, we largely ignored the doubts and sailed on to Athens! Our move to the city was an adjustment, Res’s new job allowed her to make new friendships and meet new people, while Lexi continued work online. We began to get to know the city better, its strong coffee culture, winter blooming orange trees and many cats made the city quickly feel like a new home. The van was often a point of worry as we had quickly learned (within an hour of arriving to be exact) that this city was not exactly compatible with a larger vehicle, due to the hilly streets that Schmandy chugged up, the spontaneous double-parked cars, and nonexistent parking spaces. Res began with a new chapter of self-discovery and growth through their ADHD diagnosis and Lexi began to see Athens as a more long term stay, rather than a stop along the van route. We had family and chosen family visit and would take the van on weekend trips around Attica to places like Souniou, Corinth, and Loutraki. Needless to say, we fell in love with Greece; from the endless cafes on streets lined with fruiting citrus trees, to the natures deep blues and whites of the sea and mountainous rocks to the lush green forests of the north. During our first summer in Greece, we decided to escape the sweltering heat of the city by taking the van through the north of Greece. We explored the rugged-roaded mountains, swam in the cool lakes near Mount Olymp and showered under very cold waterfalls of Trikala. We fell in love with the deep history of the places we passed and the ancient stories that were intertwined with them. Our love for the ancient stories, led us to a trip to Delphi in the spring of 2024. As we sat on a boulder overlooking the outstretching olive groves and Aegean sea after a day of exploring the old ruins of Delphi's Oracle, we basked the last rays of sun and reflected on our journey of five years together. And it was there, in the shadow of Delphi's ancient tales, on a warm spring evening, that we decided to marry.
Lexi wanted to go back to University, so she applied to a Master’s Degree in Finland of all places. She got accepted and we packed all of our things into Schmandy and drove 3.500 km from Athens to Helsinki. In the year that we spent there we got to know the city and the cold north, with its ups and downs. While Res was working from home, Lexi had her first exhibitions as an artistic researcher and artist. Although the climate zone change was difficult for us having gotten used to the Mediterranean life, we were also able to have unique experiences: The Northern Lights, picking mushrooms in the boreal forest, walking on the frozen Sea, petting reindeer, Sauna and Avanto (ice bathing). However after a year, Lexi, the “Streber” that she is, has already finished her 2 year Master program, and we felt our time in Finland coming to a close. We spent a year following Lexi’s dream of becoming an artist, but now it was time for Res’ dream: Studying Music. Res found a Conservatory in Athens and got accepted! So we packed all of our things back into the van and made our way back to the home we had built before moving to Finland.
As yet a new year rolled in, we found ourselves again in the city unrelated to our origins, yet with the strong feeling like we were back home. This time, Res’s prospective plans were less about money making, and more about making dreams come true. Their long held passion for music and singing had finally won over and they began their Diploma studies in Vocal performance with a focus in Jazz at Philippos Nakas Conservatory. The school is in the same neighborhood as our first apartment, a constant reminder of the warm memories that led us to where we are now. The apartment hunt concluded with an old apartment infused with stereotypical Greek features like marble sinks and wood and terrazzo marble floors. The neighborhood has its perks, like our good friends living just down the road, and a historic and thriving artistic scene. And here we are! Starting a new chapter, with a new adventure on the horizon; Marriage!
