Flight

Flying to California

Most of you will probably be flying to California. Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is on the outskirts of the city of Reno, Nevada, and is the closest airport to Truckee (~45 min drive from Truckee). San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the biggest airport in northern California and has quite a lot of airlines flying into it. Google Maps says SFO is a three hours away from Truckee, but with traffic this is usually 4 hours door-to-door (sometimes longer if you hit rush hour in San Francisco/Oakland/Sacramento), but a cool journey nonetheless. If you have any questions about your potential route, please do reach out :)

Rental Car

Car Rental

Public transport is a challenge for much of the west coast of the USA, and hiring a car is the best way of getting around/seeing California in the time you have available. Do NOT rent a plug-in electric car if you’re planning to road trip, you will struggle to find a place to charge it. In general we would not recommend renting a plug-in unless you’ve checked with your accommodation you can charge it (most in Truckee don’t). There are the usual rental car options (Hertz, Enterprise, SIXT etc) at RNO and SFO.

Truckee Accommodation

Truckee is a popular place for in the winter sports lovers and hiking / biking / watersports / chilling in the summer. Because of this, there are quite a lot of accommodation options in the area. We'll be getting married around Lake Mary, near Sugar Bowl Resort. Good places to stay in/around the Lake Mary area that we recommend looking at include: Soda Springs and Norden (~3-5 mins drive from Lake Mary), West Donner Lake (~5-10 mins drive from Lake Mary), Tahoe Donner (~10-15 mins drive from Lake Mary), and Truckee / Downtown Truckee (~15-20 mins drive from Lake Mary). If you can, finding accommodation near to or in Truckee Downtown would be our recommendation if you're want to be to close to food, coffee, and activities :) In terms of types of accommodation, there are good hotel, cabin, and AirBnb options in the area. Hotel options that we recommend include: - The Best Western Plus Truckee-Tahoe Hotel - Truckee Donner Lodge - West River House - Truckee Donner Lodge - West River House There are also a load of great AirBnb options for group sizes of 5-8 people. The houses/AirBnbs are usually designed around big groups coming up to Truckee in the winter to ski, so there are quite a lot of properties with bedrooms with one double bed and a bunk bed set-ups etc. While there is a lot of accommodation around Lake Tahoe itself, it is quite a long way from Truckee/Lake Mary (>45 mins) and will be tricky to get back to around the wedding. Important note: Do be aware that while we are really REALLY hoping that this doesn’t happen, over the last couple of years California has been impacted by wildfires/wildfire smoke. Do consider a possibility where flights/plans may be disrupted or cancelled by smoke if wildfires do happen in the region. Again, we really hope this doesn’t happen, but it’s important to know that it might and encourage travel and accommodation options that have flexible booking/cancellation policies just in case.
