Most of you will probably be flying to California. Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is on the outskirts of the city of Reno and is the closest airport to Truckee (~45 min drive from Truckee). San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the biggest airport in northern California and has quite a lot of airlines flying into it from overseas. Google Maps says SFO is a three hours away from Truckee, but with traffic this is usually a 4 hour drive door-to-door (sometimes longer if you hit rush hour in San Francisco/Oakland/Sacramento), but a cool journey nonetheless. If you have any questions about your route, please do reach out :) For those coming from overseas, we recommend looking at return flights to/from Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), or return flights to/from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and purchasing an internal flight from SFO to Reno on airlines like Southwest Airlines or United (it can work out cheaper to do it this way ;) ).
Public transport is a challenge for much of the west coast of the USA, and hiring a car is the best way of getting around/seeing California in the time you have available. Do NOT rent an electric car if you’re planning to road trip, you will struggle to find a place to charge it. In general we would not recommend renting a plug-in hybrids either unless you’ve checked with that your accommodation has charging options (most accommodation in Truckee doesn't). There are the usual rental car options (Hertz, Enterprise, SIXT etc) at RNO and SFO. If you’re feeling adventurous and have a bunch of time, there is a train from San Francisco to Truckee which takes a billion years and none of us have ever done it … but you could (in theory) do it. However, car hire from in/around airports is what we suggest :) There are also buses from San Francisco (Bus Station) to Truckee (~6:30am most days, $28-35, ~6 hours), or Reno city centre (Reno Amtrak) to Truckee (~11:30am most days, ~$10, 45mins), with tickets available to purchase at FlixBus or Greyhound. Noting that both bus stations are located a long way from either airport. When in Truckee, public transport/Uber options are limited. There is a bus service connecting Truckee/Donner Lake with Lake Tahoe, but it can be a little unreliable. If you're interested, more info on routes available here: https://tahoetruckeetransit.com/.
We will be getting married in a part of the world that’s super special to us, the gorgeous Lake Mary in the High Sierras! Quinn spent her younger years growing up in the mountains around Truckee, and it has become a second home for us over the years that we love to escape to and explore - you’ll see why when you get here! Lake Mary itself is a small, intimate venue nestled in alpine forests. As the name suggests, the venue overlooks a gorgeous lake with sandy shores and nice meadows. The ceremony and celebrations will be taking place on a sheltered deck, with shuttles available from Lake Mary to accommodation in Sugar Bowl as well as down in Truckee.
