Question

Where is Mackinac Island?

Answer

Mackinac Island is an island located between the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan.

Question

How do I get to Mackinac Island?

Answer

You will need to take a ferry across the Straits of Mackinac to get to the island. There is a ferry dock in Mackinaw City, MI (lower peninsula) and St. Ignace, MI (upper peninsula). The ferry company you will use is Sheplers Ferry. Please see the Travel page for more details.

Question

I need to fly into Michigan, where do you recommend?

Answer

We understand that Mackinac Island is hard to get to if you are out of state. The following are the best airports to fly into: Closest: Pellston Regional Airport, Pellston (PLN), 25 minutes Additional Options: Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City (TVC) 2 hours Bishop International Airport, Flint (FNT), 3 hours Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Romulus (DTW), 4 hours

Question

How do I get to the ferry docks after I fly into Michigan?

Answer

Once you fly into one of the nearby airports, here’s how you can get to the ferry docks in Mackinaw City: Pellston Regional Airport (PLN): The closest option. You can arrange a shuttle with Mackinac Shuttle, which takes about 25 minutes. The shuttle can accommodate 40–50 passengers at a time. To book, call 231-539-7005 or email info@mackinawshuttle.com. Traverse City Airport (TVC): There is a Megabus that departs Traverse City daily at 7:00 PM and arrives in Mackinaw City around 10:00 PM. Tickets are $19 per person. You can find more details and purchase tickets at: https://us.megabus.com/route-guides/traverse-city-to-mackinaw-city-bus Larger Airports (e.g., Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City): If you fly into a major Michigan airport, the best option is to rent a car and drive to Mackinaw City. Please note: There are no Uber or Lyft services available in this area, so plan transportation ahead of time.

Question

Once I am on the Island, how do I get around?

Answer

One of the most unique things about Mackinac Island is that cars are completely banned! To get around, you'll be walking, biking, or riding in a horse-drawn carriage—just like the old days. If you’d prefer a more relaxed ride, you can take a horse-drawn taxi through Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, but please note: all rides must be scheduled in advance. To book, call 906-847-3323 ahead of time. You’re welcome to bring your own bike to the island, or rent one once you arrive. There are plenty of rental shops downtown, though keep in mind that pricing can add up if you plan to keep the bike for several hours or the whole day.

Question

I am staying at Mission Point Resort but it is so far from the Ferry Docks! How do I get there with my bags?

Answer

Mackinac Island is home to some strong dockporters on bikes! These dockporters will take your luggage to the hotel for you. Mission Point is a solid 25 minute walk away from the docks. They do offer a shuttle between the ferry docks and Mission Point if you want to go straight to the hotel, but note that this costs $9 per person.

Question

What is the dress code?

Answer

Cocktail attire.
