If you're flying into Rome, you're just a scenic 1.5–2 hour drive from the abbey. Trains also run regularly between Rome and the two closest towns to the Abbey, Spoleto and Terni. Whether you start or end your trip here, it's the perfect base to explore Italy. We visited Rome in May and instantly fell in love! We cannot wait to go back.
Just 15 minutes from the Abbey, the Marmore Falls are the tallest man-made waterfalls in Europe—a truly stunning sight! The water is released three times a day, so we recommend arriving an hour before to hike up without getting soaked and catch the falls in full force. 📍 Location: Infopoint Belvedere Inferiore, Piazzale F. Fatati 6, Terni. 🎟️ Tickets: €12
Looking for a bit of adrenaline? Head to Scheggino (15 minute drive from the Abbey) for white-water rafting on the River Nera—a fun and refreshing way to take in the region’s natural beauty. All skill levels are welcome, and it’s an unforgettable group activity in a stunning setting.
SPOLETO Just a short drive from the abbey is the hilltop town of Spoleto - wander its cobbled streets, visit ancient Roman landmarks, and soak in the authentic Umbrian atmosphere. If you're looking for a truly memorable dining experience, we can personally recommend Osteria del Matto , an incredibly authentic spot with delicious, home-cooked food. It's run by an eccentric and welcoming family who turn every meal into an unforgettable night. Come hungry, and ready for a little chaos (in the best way). ASSISI We also recommend visiting Assisi - the birthplace of St. Francis. You can discover artisan shops and visit the magnificent Basilica of San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage site adorned with frescoes by Giotto.
