How We Ended Up Here

Our story began because of two great friends—Ronnie and Corey Funk. The Funks had plans to set us both up for awhile; JJ and Ronnie had been friends for a few years from hunting trips out west to Montana. Lauren and Corey became fast friends teaching 4th grade at Greensburg Salem together. After a few attempts to set us up, life and timing just weren't lining up. Eventually, we crossed paths again when The Funks invited us both out one evening for a group outing. The boys went to see "Get the Led Out" at the Palace Theatre and met up with the girls after the show for some drinks at a local bar. While out we started to chat, though we were both a little nervous it was obvious there was something there. Our night continued with fun as well as Corey and Lauren feeling pretty confident they could run the "jukebox" better than anyone else at the bar. So, when they learned JJ had TouchTunes credits he was willing to share on his phone, their DJ dreams really took off. A few drinks and song selections later, Corey decided to take matters into her own hands and snuck Lauren’s phone number into JJ’s phone. Not long after that night out, JJ asked Lauren on their first official date to Gato Taco & Tequila in Irwin. Still a little nervous, but with the help from a couple tacos and a margarita (or three), the nerves disappeared and something just clicked. From that day on, we were pretty much inseparable. To this day, we’re still big believers that good food and good drinks can solve just about anything! Fast forward two years, and we planned an end of summer trip out west to the beautiful state of Washington to explore Mount Rainier, Leavenworth, and the North Cascades. Lauren had the trip itinerary covered… except for one tiny detail she didn’t see coming. On August 13, during a hike on the Burroughs Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, we hit a Y in the trail. After some persuasive navigation by JJ, we took a trail that led us up close to some of the glaciers on Mount Rainier. A few miles in, we stopped on a rocky ledge to take in the view and eat the snacks we packed. That’s when JJ leaned in and said how much he loved doing these kinds of things together and asked if Lauren wanted to do them together forever before pulling out the ring that had traveled in JJ's hiking backpack all the way from Pennsylvania! Utterly shocked (and after several, “Oh my gosh, are you serious?!”), Lauren made the easiest decision of her life and said YES—and just like that, we were engaged at 7,000 feet with the glaciers of Mount Rainier behind us. And now… here we are—planning our biggest adventure together yet!
