Big Sur is about a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive from San Fransisco International Airport depending on which route you take. If you have never driven HWY 1 before, we recommend taking HWY 1 from Half Moon Bay all the way down to Big Sur, it will most definitely take longer but it is a very scenic drive. Stop at Half Moon Bay Brewery along the way!
We know some of you have never visited this area. Big Sur is not a town, it’s a region that is a rugged stretch of California's central coast that is sparsely populated (which is why we love it). Everything is quite far apart, even within the 5 miles around the lodging and restaurants. Big sur is known for winding turns, seaside cliffs and views of the often-misty coastline.
Not really! Depending on where you are staying, there may be some service available. WIFI is really not a thing in Big Sur, some places may offer it but it hardly works.
Before coming to Big Sur you will want to fill up and grab groceries, water especially, in Carmel. Gasoline is very high priced, there is a gas station in front of Big Sur Bakery if needed! Groceries are limited in Big Sur, they do offer some things but they are very high priced as well. There are a few grocery stores off HWY 1 in Carmel.
December is known for some rainy days, so bring your rain jacket! The average temperature high/ low is about 60/40 degrees.
