Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Laura Daughtry and Shawn Ilievski
We’re so excited to celebrate with you in beautiful Buena Vista, and we truly hope this weekend feels like a little getaway for everyone. Please feel free to arrive as early as you’d like and stay as long as you can—there’s so much to explore, and we’d love for you to make a trip of it! From mountain adventures to relaxing by the river, we can’t wait for you to enjoy this special place as much as we do. Buena Vista, Colorado, is a premier outdoor destination in the Arkansas River Valley known for its views of the Collegiate Peaks (just a few of Laura's favorite 14,000-foot mountains) views, hot springs, and Arkansas River rafting. Bring your bathing suits!

Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort

15870 County Road 162, Nathrop, CO 81236

A visit to Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort is one of our favorite ways to relax and soak in the beauty of the area. Located just about 15 minutes from Buena Vista, this scenic resort is nestled between the mountains and offers natural geothermal hot springs open year-round. Guests can enjoy a variety of soaking experiences—from creekside hot springs and historic bathhouse pools to stunning infinity pools with mountain views. Whether you’re looking to unwind after a day of exploring or simply take in the incredible Colorado scenery, it’s the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy a truly unique mountain experience.

Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa

18999 County Road 306, Buena Vista, CO 81211

Another beautiful option nearby is Cottonwood Hot Springs, a more rustic and serene soaking experience tucked into a quiet canyon just outside of town. Known for its natural, mineral-rich waters, the springs feature multiple stone soaking pools at varying temperatures, surrounded by trees and mountain views for a peaceful, unplugged atmosphere . With a focus on relaxation and simplicity (think no-frills, quiet vibes), it’s the perfect spot to unwind, soak sore muscles, and fully embrace the calm of the Colorado mountains.

Noah's Ark Whitewater Rafting & Adventure Co.

23910 US Highway 285, Buena Vista, CO 81211

Rafting the Arkansas River is one of the most iconic adventures in Buena Vista—and one we highly recommend if you’re up for a little excitement! With over 100 miles of river, there are options for everyone, from scenic, beginner-friendly floats to thrilling whitewater rapids. Outfitters like Noah’s Ark Whitewater Rafting & Adventure Co. offer guided trips through stunning sections like Browns Canyon National Monument, widely considered Colorado’s most popular stretch of whitewater. Whether you’re looking for a fun, splashy introduction or a full-on adrenaline rush, rafting the “Ark” is an unforgettable way to experience the beauty and energy of the Colorado mountains.

ArkAnglers

517 U.S. 24, Buena Vista, CO 81211

For those looking to slow things down and enjoy a true Colorado experience, we highly recommend fly fishing with ArkAnglers. As one of the premier guide services in the Arkansas River Valley, they offer fully guided trips on the Arkansas River—one of the longest stretches of “Gold Medal” trout water in the state, known for incredible fishing and scenery. Whether you’re a complete beginner or experienced angler, their expert guides provide all the gear, instruction, and local knowledge you need for an unforgettable day on the water, with options ranging from relaxed half-day outings to full-day adventures (lunch included!). It’s a peaceful, uniquely Colorado way to spend time outside—and maybe even land a trout or two.

St. Elmo Ghost Town

Saint Elmo, CO 81236

A visit to St. Elmo Ghost Town is like stepping straight back into Colorado’s Wild West history. Located about 20 minutes from Buena Vista, this incredibly well-preserved ghost town was once a bustling mining community in the late 1800s, home to nearly 2,000 people before the mines closed and residents moved on. Today, you can stroll down its historic main street, explore original buildings, and even visit the seasonal general store for a few fun souvenirs. It’s an easy, scenic outing with a little bit of history, a little bit of adventure, and just the right amount of quirky charm (keep an eye out for the famously friendly chipmunks!).

Browns Canyon National Monument

Salida, CO 81201

A visit to Browns Canyon National Monument is a must for anyone looking to experience the wild beauty of the Arkansas River Valley. Stretching between Buena Vista and Salida, this protected landscape features rugged granite cliffs, colorful rock formations, and sweeping mountain views that feel quintessentially Colorado. Covering over 20,000 acres, the monument offers endless opportunities for adventure—from hiking and wildlife spotting to world-class rafting right through the canyon itself. Whether you explore by foot or simply take in the scenery, it’s an unforgettable way to experience the natural beauty that makes this area so special.

Cottonwood Pass

Since you’ve got a car, we highly recommend taking a scenic drive up Cottonwood Pass—it’s one of the most beautiful (and easiest!) ways to experience the mountains. The road winds from town all the way up to the Continental Divide, with incredible views the entire way. Head up just before sunset, grab a picnic, and enjoy it by the alpine lake at the top—truly magical. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can explore stretches of the Continental Divide right from the pass, or go earlier in the day and stop at Lost Lake for a quick 1.5–2 hour hike to a stunning alpine lake (and yes, if you’re brave, a very refreshing cold plunge awaits!).

The Book Nook

127 South San Juan Avenue, Buena Vista, CO 81211

A stop at The Book Nook is like stepping into a storybook. Housed in a charming 1930s cottage, this cozy, locally loved bookstore is filled room-by-room with new and used books, vintage finds, art supplies, and little treasures to discover. You can wander through all seven rooms, explore the whimsical “hobbit house” feel, and even walk the peaceful labyrinth on-site for a quiet moment. Whether you’re looking for your next great read or just a unique, relaxing stop in town, it’s a sweet little gem that perfectly captures Buena Vista’s creative spirit.

Hiking

Hiking in Buena Vista is truly incredible, with trails for every level—from easy riverside walks and scenic lake hikes to challenging alpine adventures in the Collegiate Peaks. Popular options include shorter, moderate hikes like Lost Lake, as well as longer routes with sweeping mountain views throughout the area. For those feeling ambitious, this area is home to several of Laura's favorite 14ers, but it’s important to know these are not casual hikes—they are long, steep, high-altitude climbs that often take a full day and require preparation and experience. Even trails labeled “hard” are truly challenging, with significant elevation gain, rocky terrain, and sometimes scrambling near the summit. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed nature walk or a serious mountain adventure, there’s something for everyone—just be sure to choose a trail that matches your comfort level and come prepared for Colorado’s ever-changing conditions. We recommend downloading AllTrails before your trek!

Shopping

Shopping in Buena Vista is one of those simple pleasures that perfectly captures the town’s charm. Stroll along East Main Street or explore the South Main neighborhood to discover a mix of locally owned boutiques, art galleries, outdoor gear shops, and specialty stores—everything from handmade jewelry and pottery to mountain-ready apparel and unique gifts. Whether you’re picking up a souvenir, browsing local art, or just enjoying a relaxed afternoon wandering in and out of shops, it’s an easy (and very enjoyable) way to soak in the creative, outdoorsy spirit of BV.
