Rosserk Friary, one of Mayo’s best preserved ecclesiastical ruins lies some 7 km north of Ballina in Killala, on the banks of the Moy and is surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country. It was built by the Joyce family in 1460 for the Friars of the Franciscan Third Order Regular.
Ballina was originally one of Ireland’s major ports. The Bond Store Warehouse (now Dillons) was built in the early 1800s beside the river Moy. It stored the imported liquor and porter that had been placed under Custom Seals until the appropriate duty had been paid.
If you make the time to travel south you cannot miss the Cliffs of Moher. It is a sight you will never forget. The weather on the cliffs can be quite intense so please check the weather conditions before planning to visit. After (or before) the cliffs you can make your way into Liscannor or Lahinch for a bite to eat and some shopping.
