Two months after we met, I (Lara) was invited to a whitewater rafting trip on the Gauley River in West Virginia. Tom had never been rafting and I invited him to come along. I grew up rafting in Ocoee, Tennessee. My Dad, Bob, was a river guide for over a decade, and I followed in his footsteps guiding in my early 20s. It had been a really long time since I sat on the back of a boat, though, and the plan was for someone who had experience guiding and kayaking on the Gauley River to be our guide. But things didn't go as planned... The experienced guide decided not to raft that day. The crew included several experienced kayakers, including my friend, Jen, who knew the Gauley River well. But Jen had never guided a raft. At the last minute, I decided to drive the boat. I was worried, because I had not been a guide for 10 years, and never on that section of the Gauley. Jen directed me to the correct routes on the river. Tom paddled hard and stayed in the boat, and I did my best not to flip the boat over. Tom trusted me, and so I trusted myself. We made it down the river safely, and we had a blast. We trusted each other that day, took a risk, and had a memorable adventure. Five years later, we know that this is the life we want together - two people working as a team through the rapids of life.
