How It Started

7.20.13

We entered each other's spheres of existence in Mr. Williams's 4th-grade class (but Ryan doesn't remember – I only remember because I was reading Harry Potter at the time and, well...). For years, we passed each other in the halls and stairwells, had maybe one class together, and managed to have very similar friend groups without ever actually being in the same place at the same time. Until the photo of a marinaded steak posted to Facebook changed everything. Three dates later – to a Sounders game, an ice skating rink, the zoo – and the rest is history!

The Proposal

2.14.21

This year, we decided to have a cozy dinner at home for Valentine's Day. We placed a pickup order in advance at a nice restaurant, so of course, it snowed epically in the preceding days. I thought our fancy at-home dinner was kaput, but Ryan made it happen despite the weather! After our meal, Ryan announced that he had something for me and left the room. I immediately felt sheepish because we never get each other gifts for Valentine's Day – we both love food so that's always been how we celebrate. He came back nervous and fidgety and I think at that moment I knew. I also already knew what my answer was, but I let him finish his thought anyway. Turns out he'd had the ring for months and was just looking for the right moment (and the proper dose of courage!). * Photos: @sarah.mae.photo *
