They like to say it was fate—or maybe the “invisible string”. In early 2021, Madeline traveled to Boston twice with her best friend, Kay, for a quick getaway and the chance to explore a new city. Friends on both sides tried to introduce Madeline and Sean, but the timing never aligned. Instead, Madeline fell in love with New England. A couple months later, in May 2021, Sean set off on a National Parks road trip with his roommates, Zach and Matt, which brought him to Chattanooga, TN—where Madeline was living at the time with Kay. Those few days in Tennessee were filled with Madeline’s hometown suggestions: hiking, rock climbing, barbecue, and Ruby Falls. Sean swears their first date happened then at a Chattanooga Lookouts baseball game, though Madeline didn’t realize it. He convinced her to tag along despite her nursing exam the next morning. She did, however, bring flash cards, making Sean quiz her through the first five innings. After (acing) her exam, Sean persuaded her to join for more of the trip. Just three days after meeting, they were road-tripping through the Smoky Mountains, swapping playlists and listening to crime podcasts for hours. They parted ways after celebrating Sean’s 27th birthday with a hike through Mammoth Caves and “Mads Falls”—unsure of what came next, but both knowing it was just the beginning. That summer, Madeline made several trips to New England—celebrating the 4th of July in Weymouth, meeting his brother, Justin, and close friends, floating the Saco River, and catching a Red Sox game. After a few visits, they spent the weekend in Blackstone, MA, with Madeline meeting Sean's parents. That same weekend, she thought she was attending a small Labor Day barbecue, only to discover it was a full Rayos Family Gathering. She was instantly taken by the warm, welcoming nature of his big, lively family. In October, Sean traveled to Chattanooga and met Madeline’s parents during a shrimp boil, as well as her two best friends (now her Maid and Matron of Honor). That weekend they explored Nashville and, on the eve of his departure, took a sunset riverboat cruise down the Tennessee River—where they officially made their relationship “official.” The next nine months were a blur of FaceTime calls and carefully planned visits around Madeline’s nursing school schedule. Along the way, they racked up Delta Medallion status and shared unforgettable experiences: watching the Braves win the World Series, Sean’s first SEC football game (where he quickly became a Vols fan), ringing in New Year’s in Portsmouth, NH, ski trips, and planning Madeline’s move north. The challenge of distance taught them to communicate deeply, trust fully, and cherish time together—laying the foundation of their relationship. In June 2022, Madeline, Sean, and Roscoe packed up and made the two-day drive north to start their first chapter together. They spent a year in Franklin, MA, before moving to Providence, RI, in 2023, where they embraced the energy of Federal Hill—Rhode Island’s “Little Italy.” By June 2024, they planted roots more permanently, closing on their dream home in Coventry, RI. Roscoe was especially happy to retire from apartment hopping. Together, they’ve loved turning their house into a home and beginning the next chapter of life in Rhode Island. In November 2024, Madeline and Sean traveled with her family to Hawai’i for a cruise around the islands. During an excursion to Rainbow Falls in Hilo, Sean got down on one knee in front of her parents, aunties, cousins, and a few surprised onlookers—and asked her to be his forever. Back home, they celebrated with Sean’s family and Roscoe in Blackstone, MA. It was the perfect beginning to this new chapter of their love story. Looking back, they credit that season of long distance for giving them the strong foundation they share today—one built on trust, laughter, intention, and the idea that their invisible string was waiting for the perfect moment to pull them together all along.
