Kim and Andrew met at their undergraduate orientation before starting their freshman year of college at the University of Hartford together. They formed an instant friendship, but their parents will argue that there was something more between them from the start. In fact, Teresa Colavito (Kim's mother) remembers turning to her husband Bill and saying "You better watch that boy, one day he will marry our daughter."
Andrew and Kim stayed in contact all summer before college began, texting and video-calling each other and building their friendship. They finally reunited at an event called "Early Adventure" organized by their college for the incoming class. It was designed to introduce new students to each other before college classes began, but they mainly hung out with only each other, playing card games, kayaking, and talking. They remained close friends through freshman and sophomore year of college, taking many of the same classes together and organizing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners together when they could fit them into their schedules. In fact, Andrew used to wake Kim and her roommate up on Saturdays at about 1:00/1:30 pm to meet her at her dorm for breakfast (with the cafeteria only serving food for 30 minutes). Over the years, their friendship evolved until they both eventually realized (at different times) that they had feelings for each other. On February 13th (even though Andrew still tries to argue that it was February 12th), Andrew cooked Kim one of his famous ready-at-2-am dinners and asked Kim to be his girlfriend.
They're always down to travel, so when their 5-year anniversary was coming up (on February 13th 2020) they decided to take a trip together to Austin, TX to visit family and see a new city together. When they went out for breakfast, they parked the car in a garage and all Andrew kept saying throughout breakfast was "I hope someone doesn't break into the car. " Kim thought this was weird, but little did she know he had left the ring in the car! After breakfast, he ran back to the car and discretely put the ring in his pocket and they spent the rest of the day sightseeing and adventuring. As the sun was getting close to setting, Andrew suggested they drive to Mount Bonnell which overlooks the Colorado River to see the sunset. Kim agreed and urged him to invite his cousins so we could all see it together, which Andrew was hoping for since one of his cousins was there to photograph the proposal. When they all arrived at the cliff overlooking the river, Andrew's cousin Shannon suggested that everyone get a group picture together so they all walked over to the cliff and as Kim was posing for the picture, Andrew turned around and got down on one knee!
