We're high school sweethearts and started talking during jazz band our junior year of high school at St. Edmond. Andrew made the first move by asking Leslie to Prom with band instruments before jazz band one day, although Leslie was the one who finally asked Andrew out. We've been dating since then, through the end of high school and through college at Iowa State where Andrew studied computer engineering and Leslie studied food science and minored in music. After undergrad, Leslie went to the University of Minnesota to get her Master's degree in food science while Andrew got a software engineering job at OSI in the Minneapolis area. Throughout this time we've gone on a lot of outdoor adventures, from the Badlands in South Dakota to climbing the tallest peak in New Mexico, and backpacking in the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. In August of 2021, Andrew planned a backpacking trip with Leslie to the Boundary Waters for the weekend. We had gone up and down the North Shore of Lake Superior plenty of times, and had camped out on the shores of Lake Superior at Split Rock Lighthouse on our first adventure up there (and lucked out with a waterfront campsite!). On the way up to Grand Marais to start our backpacking trip the next day, we stopped at Split Rock Lighthouse and Andrew proposed on the shores of Lake Superior.
