Knossos is the largest bronze age archeological site on Crete. Knossos Palace is one you will see on the boards for tours, it is definitely worth a visit if you haven't already been, but you can also drive there if you prefer, if you time it right it will be a lot quieter. It is a great place to visit if you love History & Greek Mythology: "The Palace of Knossos was the residence of the mythical King Minos, the son of Zeus and Europa. King Minos had the legendary artificer Daedalus construct a labyrinth in which to keep his son, the Minotaur, a mythical creature who was half bull and half man."
Balos beach on Gramvousa is part of two uninhabited islands off a peninsula west of Chania. These stunning beaches are often ranked best in the world. Elafonisi is often ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world. While the drive is not for the faint of heart, the destination is worth the journey. Elafonisi boasts an impressive vista and is a protected nature preserve known for its pink sand beaches. Elafonisi is a small island off the island of Crete that is accessible by walking across a sandbar.
Beautiful 10-mile hike. Adventure seekers will definitely appreciate a hike to Samaria, Europe's longest gorge. Start your day in the morning entering Omalos Village, located 2 hours away from Rethymno. After descending into the gorge, you will then walk the gorge’s 18 kilometres of natural beauty with its Cretan flora & fauna for approximately 5-7 hours.
Around 30 min away from Rethymno lies the historical Arkadi monastery. Built amongst beautiful olive groves, vineyards, pine, cypress and oak trees, this historic monastery is a symbol of the Cretan Struggle for Freedom. One of its most tragic moments was the explosion of the gun powder storage room in 1866 by Cretan rebels to avoid capture by the Turks. Today, the monastery exhibits a museum area, where you can learn about its rich history.
