Kelly and Kofi met in December 2017 at a holiday party in Seattle. Kelly had been invited by one of her college lacrosse teammates who was visiting one of the hosts, and Kofi was there as a friend of that same host. At one point, Kelly’s teammate asked, “Have you met the other person here who went to Columbia?” “No!” Kelly replied. She crossed the room, returned with Kofi, and said with a smile, “Kelly, meet Kofi.” They reminisced about their college years spent in Morningside Heights, likely crossing paths without ever meeting; Kelly was two years ahead at Barnard College, and Kofi attended Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. They moved on to discussing more recent adventures, including hydrotherapy. Kelly had recently returned from Germany exploring spas and bath towns through her medical school, and Kofi was curious whether she’d ever tried a sensory deprivation float tank. They exchanged numbers, floating (pun intended) the idea of dinner and a hydrotherapy experience in the near future. A week later, Kofi invited Kelly to another holiday party. She Uber-pooled down to Pioneer Square solo, assuming it was a typical large Seattle tech-company sponsored holiday event. As she introduced herself around the room, people kept asking, “How do you know Kofi?” “I just met him last week through a college friend,” she replied, slightly confused. It soon became clear why everyone was asking: Kofi was the host. Nearly 150 people - all connected to him - packed the bar in holiday spirit to raise money for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Despite playing host, Kofi made a point to spend time with Kelly throughout the night. When last call came around, he asked what she was doing next. With no plans, and feeling hungry, Kelly suggested one of her favorite late-night spots, Ba Bar, for Vietnamese chicken wings. They ate, talked for hours, and began what would become a close friendship that lasted several months - until their first kiss at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley during a WAR concert. Eight years, one house, and one cat later, they are thrilled to celebrate tying the knot in the city they’ve called home for a combined 22+ years. See you in Seattle!
