Visitors to Colombia ages 18 or older will need to provide proof of complete vaccination for entry into the country. For now, you do not need to show a negative COVID test to enter Colombia. However, you will need to have a negative COVID test to return to the United States within one day of departure. We can help you arrange this. For now, everything in Colombia is open as normal. There are no mask requirements as of May 15, but you are required to wear a mask while in taxis and while at the airport. As COVID rules constantly change, we will be updating this space if any new restrictions are put into place.
Bogotá is located in the mountains and it is normally between 50-65°F (10-17° C). Sometimes it rains during the day. Our advice is to bring layers and an umbrella or light rain jacket. If you decide to travel to another city (especially the coast), it will be HOT, so you might need a different wadrobe.
Like any major cities, it is good to keep in mind some safety precautions, especially as a tourist. The most common type of crime is pickpocketing or phone theft without you even knowing that it happened! It is better not to bring any expensive jewelry or accessories with you on your trip. If you are using a purse, it is best to have one that zips and keep it close to you at all times, even in restaurants or bars. Be cautious about taking your phone out on the street—it is better to use your phone once you are inside an establishment. Avoid keeping things in your back pockets. After 9pm, it is recommended to call a taxi or uber (they are super cheap).
Many Colombians speak some English, but it helps to know a few basic words and phrases! Our recommendation is to download the app Duolingo or Babbel on your phone and practice a bit before you come.
Colombia uses pesos colombianos or COP. US dollars are not accepted here. You can take pesos out of an ATM with your debit card or exchange dollars at the airport. Most establishments take international credit cards, but smaller stores and taxis not booked on an app will require cash payment. Most souvenir shopping will also require cash, especially if you do it at the flea market. You do not have to tip in Colombia. At restaurants and bars, it is already included in the bill and taxi drivers do not expect it.
